Most people step aboard a yacht and notice the styling, the materials, and the atmosphere. What they won't see is the engineering that enables it all to function seamlessly.

Behind every clean interior line sits a network of structural decisions, systems integration and production planning. Tankage balanced for stability. Routing designed for access and maintenance. Lightweight composite structures engineered to reduce weight without compromising strength.

The more refined the onboard experience feels, the more coordination has usually happened behind the scenes.

At Thorne Yacht Design, the integration of naval architecture, engineering, and design is where much of the real work begins.

The HOLLD 72 MYC is a 22m carbon-built power catamaran designed for efficiency, control and offshore capability.

Thorne Designs led the design, structural engineering and naval architecture for the model, providing a fully integrated technical approach from concept through to development.

Lightweight composite construction supports range and performance, while the hull geometry and beam deliver stability and predictable handling over longer passages.

Built to ISO Category A, the focus is on a platform that performs safely and consistently at sea, where structure, weight and design are carefully aligned.

Thank you to Bluefin LED Underwater Lighting for inviting Eliot Thorne to contribute to this piece exploring how underwater lighting is increasingly being considered as part of yacht safety across both new builds and refits.

The article brings together perspectives from across the industry, including Pantaenius for Superyachts and charter management company Dean & Waters, highlighting how visibility around the stern is now seen as part of broader operational and risk-management thinking.

An interesting look at how lighting, when properly integrated, can support safer night-time operations - alongside its more familiar aesthetic role.

Introducing Ed Salter, our new intern at Thorne Yacht Design.

Ed recently graduated from the University of the West of England with a degree in mechanical engineering. As a passionate sailor, he has a strong interest in marine engineering.

During his six-month internship, Ed will be mentored by Will, a Design Engineer and Naval Architect at Thorne, gaining hands-on experience with live projects - such as the M90 - in both the Hythe yard and the Lymington design office.

In the past, we have recognised the significant value of bringing interns onto our team, and we are always excited to support the next generation in the marine industry.

A warm welcome to the team Ed!

Thorne Design had a fantastic few days at the International Multihull Show. It’s always a pleasure to return to an environment that reflects a core aspect of our work and background.

It’s fascinating to see how the industry continues to evolve, not only in terms of performance and long-range cruising concepts but also with the increasing shift towards electric and hybrid propulsion, enhanced energy management, and continued advancements in lightweight composite construction.

Moreover, there is a noticeable trend towards balancing performance with onboard volume and usability, particularly in both sailing and powercat platforms.

The show provides a valuable opportunity to take a step back from our projects and engage in meaningful conversations with builders and partners across the sector.

Thank you to ACCWing for taking us out on the water and to everyone who took the time to stop by and speak with us.

Day one at the

You will find us in the Multihull Design & Innovation area (H66), where the team are looking forward to a few days of great conversations around performance, efficiency and evolving design approaches across the market.

Please do come and say hello!

Gerhard van Slijpe, Project Manager at Vitters Shipyard , recently commented on the HOLLD 74.

"Integrating such a high-quality interior with all the necessary systems - without compromising on aesthetics or functionality - is no small feat. It reflects not only technical expertise, but also strong collaboration and attention to detail across disciplines."

As naval architecture partners on the HOLLD 74, we hold ourselves to this standard on every project. Systems are never compromised and neither is the aesthetic. Routing, integration, and weight distribution are all engineered so that performance and refinement answer to each other.

Proud to be part of a build that others in this industry are taking notice of.

Some of the most interesting design challenges come from the parts people rarely notice.

On the HOLLD 74, we worked with HOLLD Yachts and Dijksman Design to develop a carbon composite davit system. Typically treated as purely functional, it became an opportunity to align engineering with the overall design. Read more here.

Explore the synergy of Art and Engineering in yacht design with our innovative davit system, blending elegance and strength.

We are looking ahead to next month and exhibiting at the International Multihull Show from April 22 to April 26.

Multihull design has always been a fundamental aspect of Thorne Yacht Design’s expertise, with experience that includes performance cruising catamarans, offshore race boats, and advanced composite structures. This show is always a highlight for our team.

We look forward to reconnecting with industry friends and clients in La Grand Motte. If you’re attending, please stop by and say hello!
