Honda UMK435 4-Stroke Strimmer Service & Overhaul

Another tricky repair sorted and back out the door! This 4-stroke Honda came in bogging down under load and failing to pick up full revs.

Diagnosis & Work Carried Out:

Exhaust De-Carbon: The main culprit was a completely choked-up, carbon-heavy exhaust caused by poor carburettor tuning. The muffler was removed, heat-treated to burn out the heavy carbon build, and flushed clean to restore full airflow.

Carburettor & Intake Overhaul: Stripped, fully rebuilt, and ultrasonic cleaned the carb. Replaced missing intake bolts and hand-cut a new two-stage foam air filter, lightly oiled to factory spec.

Engine Protection: Noticed some fine metallic particles in the old engine oil, so the crankcase was treated to two full hot oil flushes before being refilled with fresh 4-stroke oil. Cleaned heavy dirt and debris off the cylinder cooling fins to prevent future overheating.

Full Service: Fitted a fresh spark plug and gave the entire machine a deep clean and full safety checkover.
Now starting on the key and revving crisp and clean right through the range!

Bench Work: Total Service & Overhaul on a Classic Stihl FS 86 🛠️

Working out in the garden today—excuse the mess, it's half term so the workshop has temporarily relocated outdoors while keeping an eye on the kids! 😂

Nothing beats the bulletproof build quality of these older Stihl powerheads, but years of poor running and heavy dirt take their toll. Here’s a look at the workshop overhaul on this bike-handle unit:

Walbro WT Carburetor Teardown: Stripped down the original Walbro WT carb, flushed out all micro-passages, set the metering needle lever height, and rebuilt it with fresh diaphragms and gaskets.

Exhaust De-Oiling: This unit had been run on the wrong fuel-to-oil mixture for ages, causing a heavy accumulation of raw oil in the muffler. Degreased and treated the exhaust to draw out the trapped oil so the carbon can burn off easily and restore proper backpressure.

Cooling System Deep Clean: Fully degreased the cylinder cooling fins. Clearing away years of baked-on oil and grit restores proper airflow, letting the 2-stroke run significantly cooler under heavy clearing work.

Fuel Plumbing Refresh: Replaced old, hardened fuel lines with fresh flex hose and dropped in a new high-flow fuel pickup filter inside the tank. Full flush of the petrol tank getting the debris out.

Intake & Final Tune: Deep-cleaned the cast aluminum air box housing, resealed the intake tract, and dialed in the H/L mixture screws for instant throttle response and a crisp idle.

We don't just wipe off the plastics—we fix the underlying issues so every machine that leaves the bench runs cleanly and lasts.

"Just make it run and keep it cheap." 🛠️

We hear this all the time with trade machines. Not every job needs a total cosmetic overhaul—sometimes you just need your workhorse back on the site making you money.

This chainsaw came in missing its pull cord entirely, complete with a broken casing where the cord feeds through. Rather than forcing the customer to wait and pay for a full replacement casing, we worked around it to get the recoil mechanism re-threaded, spring tensioned, and pulling smooth again.

Here’s what we sorted to get it straight back into action:
Recoil System Repaired: Threaded and installed a new heavy-duty starter cord without requiring a costly casing replacement. (Forgot to take a picture with no pull cord)

Chain & Bar Serviced: Precision-sharpened the teeth and tensioned the chain properly for clean, effortless cutting.

Oil Delivery Restored: Fixed the internal chain lubrication system so the bar gets steady oil flow to prevent overheating and premature wear.

Quick Shop Clean: Blasted off the worst of the built-up sawdust and grime to keep air flowing and mechanisms moving smoothly.

​Got another non-runner back in action on the garden workbench! This grass trimmer arrived refusing to run unless kept on full choke—a classic sign of fuel starvation and air leaks.

​Work completed:

​Replaced split fuel lines & leaking tank grommet

​Installed new fuel filter & clean air filter

​Fitted new primer bulb & fresh spark plug

​Flushed fuel tank & thoroughly cleaned assembly

​Carburetor fully tuned to run crisp off choke with smooth idling

We got stuck into this heavy-duty Yard Pro counter-rotating tine (CRT) rotovator this week. As you can see from the first few photos, the fuel system was in rough shape and needed some serious attention.
