The storage needs to be secure enough to trust overnight, simple enough to use in 30 seconds and robust enough to take years of heavy daily use without maintenance intervention.

Inferior galvanising fails prematurely. Imported products fall short of UK compliance standards. And when defects emerge after the defects liability period closes, the cost lands with the client or contractor — not the supplier.

LTN 1/20 is the government guidance that sets the standard for cycle infrastructure design in England. If your scheme needs a transport statement, it applies to you.

Dimensions: rack spacing, aisle widths, and clearance zones are all defined
Security: long-stay provision must be covered, secure, and access-controlled.
Bike types: E-bikes, cargo bikes & non-standard cycles must be accommodated

Location: close to building entrances, step-free, naturally surveilled

Get it right at Stage 2. It's much harder to fix at Stage 4.

Mixed-use developments have a cycle storage problem that single-use schemes don't.

Residents need secure, long-stay storage. Workers and visitors need short-stay parking that's easy to find and quick to use. Retail customers need something visible at the entrance. And the planning authority needs numbers that satisfy both residential and commercial requirements simultaneously.

One product type doesn't solve all of this. The best mixed-use schemes plan cycle storage by user type, not by total space count.
