Huddersfield Market Progresses
Following the successful award of funding GSA have worked hard with the project team to develop detailed proposals, for planning and listed building applications for the works at the Grade II* Listed building. Existing and listed buildings offer up unique challenges which often require bespoke solutions. Huddersfield Market is no exception; here the market consists of an impressive cast iron and glazed structure, which sits on a sloping site and boasts a successful second-hand market on Saturdays with customers also visiting during the week for general goods and fruit and veg.
The council’s vision for the market is for a family friendly, safe and social space, which offer unique, personal, ethical shopping experiences alongside opportunities to test ideas, eat, learn and be entertained.
During the design development GSA were involved with engagement sessions with the public and traders. The feedback gained from this shaped the plans that were submitted in the planning application. It was very clear the market offer must be at the centre of any regeneration proposal with the focus around enhancing the existing facilities to maximise trading opportunities, access and public safety.
Nick Mitchell – Project Architect for Huddersfield Market
‘For me, as someone from Huddersfield, this project is a special one. I’m very proud to have the opportunity to work on a building that I know well and have seen change over the last few decades.
Since 2021 we have been working closely with Kirklees and the market team to secure government funding and ensure the proposals are well suited to the site. It’s a very dynamic and exciting time for Huddersfield, with lots of regeneration projects in progress, which will come to fruition in the next 5-10 years. The proposals here build on the most successful aspects of the market, with some key moves to modernise the facilities and take care of the existing building. These changes have been carefully considered to help secure the market’s place in a changing retail environment’.
