How do you engineer confidence in systems that must perform in increasingly complex environments?

In this month’s Fellows Spotlight, Dr Soma Maroju shares his perspective on solving technical challenges through systems thinking, applied engineering, and research-led innovation.

Soma’s work focuses on creating digital solutions and data-driven analysis that turns complex engineering problems into practical, evidence-based insight - combining analytical rigour with real-world application to improve how systems are designed, assessed and delivered.

His Fellowship research highlights the importance of deep technical expertise in advancing capability across engineering and science.

How do you predict risk in systems too large - and too complex - to observe directly?

In this month’s Fellows Spotlight, Dr Michael Barry explores how environmental modelling helps turn uncertainty into evidence-based decision-making.

Michael’s research focuses on water quality modelling and software development - advancing tools that simulate how pollutants move through catchments and waterways, helping improve confidence in how environmental systems are understood and managed.

His work sits at the intersection of engineering, computation and environmental science - where modelling becomes a way to test, challenge and improve real-world decisions.

This Armed Forces Day, we'd like to say thank you.

Across BMT are colleagues who have served, continue to serve as reservists, or support family members in the Armed Forces. Their experience doesn't stay in the past – it shapes the way we work every day.

Whether it's calm decision-making under pressure, technical expertise, leadership or teamwork, the skills developed through military service strengthen our business and the support we provide to customers.

At BMT, inclusion means recognising that different experiences make us stronger. Military service is one of the many perspectives that enrich our teams, strengthen our thinking and help us deliver better outcomes for our customers.

We're proud to have retained our Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award, recognising our continued commitment to supporting veterans, reservists and military families.

To everyone who serves, has served, or supports those who do – thank you.

This World Ocean Day, we're reflecting on the role businesses can play in creating a more resilient ocean future.

At BMT, sustainability is embedded in the projects we deliver and the way we work. From supporting offshore wind and low-carbon maritime solutions through to community engagement, education and environmental awareness, we’re helping to conserve marine environments.

Over the past year:
- Our employees raised money for seafarers and their families through the Seafarers’ 24 Peaks Challenge and a London Marathon run
- We’ve introduced young people to marine science through hands-on ocean learning activities
- We’ve supported the expansion of sustainability education facilities at Greyhope Bay in Aberdeen
- Colleagues inspired future engineers through STEM activities with Sea Cadets, and at public events across the UK
- Donated £20,000 to the Sea-Changers Next Wave Fund to inspire the next generation of ocean stewardship

Because protecting our oceans isn't just about technology, policy or investment. It's about helping people build a connection with the marine environment and inspiring the next generations to care for it.

What happens when engineering decisions are tested long before anything is built?

In this month’s Fellows Spotlight, Dr Shona Cunningham shares how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is helping engineers understand performance, safety and efficiency in increasingly complex environments.

Shona’s research applies high-fidelity simulation to real-world engineering challenges - from hydrodynamics and hull performance to airflow, safety modelling and emerging applications of AI in simulation.

Her work demonstrates how advanced modelling can reduce uncertainty, accelerate design decisions, and improve confidence before systems ever reach operation.

What does autonomy look like when it moves beyond theory and into operational reality?

In this month’s Fellows Spotlight, Dr Eshan Rajabally provides a glimpse of two current research interests along with a view of the future of autonomy and how he is pulling on the breadth of expertise at BMT.

His research spans everything from autonomous navigation and machine situational awareness to the practical challenges of trust, safety, and human interaction with emerging technologies.

What if talent isn’t the problem - opportunity is?

Across the UK, thousands of young people have the potential to succeed, but not always the support to get there.

We’re proud to be partnering with IntoUniversity to help change that.

With £10,000 in funding and hands-on volunteering from our people, we’ll be supporting students through mentoring and career-focused programmes designed to build confidence and open doors.

Because where you start shouldn’t define where you can go.

At BMT, International Women’s Day is more than a date in the calendar, it’s a chance to celebrate the women whose expertise, leadership and curiosity strengthen our organisation every day.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, reflects how we approach mentoring.

When we give our time, perspective and support to others, we don’t just help individuals grow - we strengthen our teams, leadership and culture. Mentoring builds confidence, encourages fresh thinking and creates space for shared learning across roles and disciplines.

In the video below, our Global General Counsel, Trudy Grey, shares what mentoring has taught her. In our latest blog, colleagues reflect on how mentoring has helped them think more strategically, broaden their perspective and approach their careers with greater intention.

For us, Give to Gain is more than a theme - it’s how we build stronger organisations.
