With deep sadness, we share the passing of our company owner and founder, Mariusz Hadrys — a beloved dad, husband, grandad, a business partner and a friend to many.

He was not only the heart behind Vortex Professional LTD, but also a true professional—highly knowledgeable, dedicated, and respected for his old-school approach to the craft. His standards, work ethic, and passion shaped everything this company stands for today.

For years, he shared his knowledge with us, teaching us not only the business, but the value of doing things properly, with integrity and pride. He always dreamed that one day we would carry this forward.

We will continue to run Vortex Professional LTD in his honour, together with Maks, following the principles he instilled in us.

Thank you to everyone who supported him and our business over the years.
His legacy will live on in everything we do.

Rest in peace 🤍
We will continue to make you proud 🥺🖤

Mastering Distressed and Vintage Wood Finishes

Clients want character, not cookie-cutter. That weathered, time-worn aesthetic remains one of the most requested looks in interior design, yet many professionals struggle to achieve authentic results without compromising durability.

The key lies in layering techniques with the right coating systems. Start with a base coat that enhances natural grain, then selectively distress edges and high-touch areas before sealing. Our Italian-crafted Kemichal range offers polyurethane, acrylic, and water-based options specifically formulated to work across both open- and closed-pore woods. These finishes preserve that soft-touch, velvety surface whilst resisting scratches, fingerprints, and yellowing over time. For added depth, consider tinted lacquers or wood stains from our NITORO collection (40 rich colours) applied in varied opacities across different zones of the piece. The result? A genuinely aged appearance with professional-grade protection that satisfies both aesthetic vision and practical demands.

What's your go-to technique for achieving authentic vintage character? Have you experimented with layering different finish types to build depth? 🎨

Choosing the Right Sheen: Matt, Satin, or Gloss?

The finish you choose can make or break a wood project. Too much shine on a rustic piece feels wrong, whilst a matt finish on a high-traffic tabletop won't hold up. Sheen levels directly impact both aesthetics and durability, yet many professionals still treat this decision as an afterthought.

Here's what you need to know: Matt finishes (3-15% sheen) work brilliantly for statement pieces where you want the wood grain to speak without distraction. Our OCV826G03 at 3% delivers that dead matt look, whilst LGA05 at 15% adds subtle depth. Satin finishes (20-30% sheen) strike the balance most clients want. They hide minor imperfections better than matt whilst maintaining an elegant, contemporary feel. The OPV256BV at 30% is particularly robust for furniture that needs to withstand daily use. High gloss finishes (90%+ sheen) remain unmatched for dramatic impact and maximum protection on surfaces like tabletops and desks, where our LDA200 excels with superior scratch resistance.

What sheen level do you reach for most often in your projects? Are you seeing clients request more matt finishes to match current interior trends? 🎨

Custom Paint Mixing: The Professional's Route to Unique Wood Finishes

Creating truly unique wood colours isn't about picking from a standard catalogue. It's about precision colour matching, understanding material properties, and having access to professional-grade polyurethane coatings that deliver consistent results. At our Wembley mixing room, we work with carpenters and spray shops daily who need exact colour replication for restoration projects or entirely new shades for bespoke furniture pieces.

The technical aspect matters here: MDF requires different handling than solid wood, water-based finishes behave differently to traditional polyurethanes, and achieving that perfect shade demands calibrated equipment and 62 years of Italian coating expertise from Kemichal. We stock over 2,000 colour formulations through RAL, NCS, and KEMILAC systems, ensuring you're not limited by off-the-shelf options. Whether you're matching a client's existing décor or developing a signature finish for your workshop, professional colour matching removes the guesswork and delivers repeatable results every time.

What's your biggest challenge when specifying custom colours for client projects? Do you find matching existing finishes or creating entirely new palettes more demanding? 🎨

Choosing the Right Spray Gun for Wood Coatings 🎯

The wrong spray gun choice costs you time, material, and finish quality. Professional woodworkers know that HVLP, LVLP, and airless systems each serve distinct purposes when applying polyurethane, acrylic, or water-based coatings to wood surfaces.

HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) remains the industry standard for fine furniture work, delivering exceptional transfer efficiency with minimal overspray. It works brilliantly with lacquers and varnishes but requires a substantial compressor. LVLP (Low Volume Low Pressure) suits smaller workshops with limited air supply, offering decent atomisation whilst consuming less air. Airless systems excel at covering large surface areas quickly—think cabinet shops processing multiple units daily—though they demand more experience to achieve uniform results with wood stains and primers.

Your coating viscosity, project scale, and workspace setup determine which system delivers optimal results. Are you working primarily on bespoke furniture pieces or running high-volume production? What's your current biggest frustration with spray application consistency?

Sustainable Wood Finishing Without Compromising Performance

Professional woodworkers face a genuine challenge: clients increasingly demand eco-friendly solutions, yet project deadlines and quality standards remain non-negotiable. Water-based and acrylic coatings have matured significantly, now offering the durability and finish quality traditionally associated with solvent-based systems whilst reducing environmental impact.

Consider Kemichal's water-based exterior primers like the ISA1604B, which provide robust adhesion and weather resistance for outdoor joinery without the harsh fumes of conventional primers. Their acrylic top coats (LUA930 and LUA936 ranges) resist yellowing on light woods, maintain natural grain visibility, and deliver scratch-resistant, velvety finishes ideal for contemporary furniture projects. These formulations achieve full gloss or satin results through spray application, drying rapidly to meet demanding production schedules. What sustainable coating challenges are you currently facing in your workshop? Have you tested water-based systems that genuinely match the performance of traditional polyurethanes?

Colour Consistency: Mastering Finishes on Different Timbers

Getting an exact colour match is rarely straightforward when you are spraying open- or closed-pore woods that react differently to every coating. The natural grain and base tone of the timber will always fight to influence the final look, often turning a standard grey finish blue on maple or warm beige on oak.

Understanding this interaction is vital for professional results, which is why off-the-shelf solutions often fall short for high-end joinery. At our Wembley facility, we account for these natural variables using the Kemilac Color System and our new NITORO Wood Stains. We formulate bespoke recipes to ensure your polyurethane or acrylic finish looks exactly as intended, guaranteeing uniformity across your entire project.

Which wood species gives you the most trouble when trying to secure an exact colour match?

Are you seeing a higher demand for 'natural-look' matt finishes or high gloss from your clients lately?

We provide precision colour matching and Italian-grade wood coatings that ensure a flawless, durable result every time.

Don't Let Winter Ruin Your Spray Finish

Getting a consistent cure in a cold, damp workshop is one of the biggest frustrations for professional sprayers this time of year. Temperature fluctuations don't just slow you down; they compromise the chemical hardening process of your coatings, often leading to blooming or poor adhesion on MDF and timber.

To combat this, you need chemistry that adapts to the environment. Switching to specialised additives like the C336 Fast Hardener, which is optimised specifically for low-temperature applications, ensures your primer sets correctly even in difficult winter conditions. Pairing this with high-performance options like the LLA6AA10 Acrylic Top Coat allows for polishing in just 12 hours—halving the wait time of standard varnishes—so your production line keeps moving regardless of the forecast. 🌡️ ⏱️

How are you maintaining consistent temperatures in your spray shop this month? Do you switch hardeners when the weather turns?
