SCS at ASME Turbo Expo: Hydrogen Combustor Insights

Looking back at the GT2025 ASME Turbo Expo paper on hydrogen combustor temperatures using Thermal History Coatings - one of a growing number of high-quality peer reviewed ASME papers produced by SCS in recent years.

Over 20,000 high-resolution temperature measurements highlighted the increased heat transfer effects associated with hydrogen-enriched fuel and the need for enhanced cooling strategies - a strong validation of the need for higher-resolution measurement capabilities in these environments.

Mapping the Future of Engine Efficiency at ASME Turbo Expo.

2024 proved hugely successful with the technical paper, “Unique High-Resolution Temperature Mapping of Stage 1 Turbine Vane in a Long-Term Engine Test” (GT2024-126737).

This was presented at the conference and gained a lot of traction and went on to be published in the Journal of Turbomachinery.

The study demonstrates how Thermal History Coatings (THCs) can deliver high-resolution surface temperature mapping on a stage 1 turbine vane following long-term engine testing - providing critical validation data for next-generation engine design.

This successful collaboration combined:

• Doosan’s engine test environment, components, and thermal simulation expertise

• Sensor Coating Systems THC technology, thermal mapping, and data analysis

As the industry pushes toward net zero, advanced thermal measurement tools like THCs are play a key role in optimising engine efficiency and validating future designs.

Ahead of ASME Turbo Expo 2024: Turning heat into high-resolution insight.

A retrospective study (GT2024-122285) demonstrates how Thermal History Coatings (THCs) were used to map maximum exposure temperatures on automotive turbocharger turbine wheels.

Developed through a collaboration between Sensor Coatings Systems and Garrett - Advancing Motion, the work applied ceramic-based THCs to three turbine wheels tested under different conditions.

The coatings enabled high-resolution (≈1–2 mm) offline reconstruction of surface temperatures, showing strong agreement with CHT simulations (often within
