What happens when one of London’s most iconic buildings becomes the inspiration for a new interiors collection?

MADE.com has collaborated with the Barbican Centre on a 23-piece collection of furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories, translating the landmark’s Brutalist architecture into contemporary design.

From lighting inspired by the Concert Hall’s coffered concrete ceilings and acoustic panels to furniture referencing the Barbican’s concrete pillars and sunken seating, the collection demonstrates how architectural forms, surfaces and details can find new expression beyond the building itself.

A fascinating reminder of the role surfaces and materials play in shaping a space’s identity.

What makes a material truly distinctive? For The Monkey Puzzle Tree | Fabrics and Wallpapers, it starts with a story.

We caught up with founder Charlotte to discover how the brand works with independent artists across the North of England to transform original artwork and personal narratives into distinctive textiles and wallcoverings.

One of the latest additions is Uphill Downdale, a new cork wallpaper inspired by the Yorkshire Dales and the changing seasons, with blossom turning into snow alongside flowing contour lines. Designed as a sister paper to the bestselling Hit the North, it’s a perfect example of the storytelling behind each collection.

From producing just one new design a year to keeping manufacturing within 100 miles of Leeds, Charlotte shares why authenticity, local craftsmanship and designing beyond trends sit at the heart of The Monkey Puzzle Tree.

🌡️ As temperatures continue to rise, material specification is becoming about more than aesthetics.

The Mayor of London’s new Heat Ready London plan highlights the growing need to design buildings and public spaces that can better withstand extreme heat.
The report reveals:

• 🏠 Around 1 million London homes may already be at high risk of overheating.
• 🏫 1,361 schools, 60 hospitals and 351 care homes are located in high heat-risk areas.
• 🌍 London could experience 2–3 times as many heatwaves within the next 20 years.

As climate resilience becomes a greater priority, architects and designers are increasingly considering surface performance alongside aesthetics.

At Surface Design Show, these are the conversations driving material innovation. If your products are helping shape a more resilient built environment, we’d love to showcase them.

It was a pleasure catching up with from GREEN GRADS at SDS26.

With Acetex & Acoustate, Salma explores how unused cigarette filter material can be transformed into a high-performance acoustic textile. By converting virgin cellulose acetate fibres into yarn, she has created a material that is naturally non-flammable, moisture repellent, thermally regulating and pest resistant, without the need for additional chemical treatments.

Designed to absorb sound and reduce noise in interior spaces, Acoustate has the potential to be used across upholstery, acoustic panels, carpets, curtains and lighting, demonstrating how overlooked waste streams can become innovative material solutions for the built environment.

Watch the video to learn more about the inspiration behind the project and the potential of Acoustate.

It was a pleasure catching up with Eleanor from Green Grads at SDS26.

Inspired by the idea of bringing storytelling into the home, The Ocean's Screen transforms waste veneer from industry into a beautifully crafted, double-sided screen. Combining hand drawing, CAD design and precision laser cutting, Eleanor has reimagined discarded materials into a functional piece that changes both the atmosphere and experience of a space.

Watch the video to hear more about the inspiration behind the project and how waste materials can be transformed through thoughtful design.
