Manchester Metrolink - Eccles Line

Over the past few months we designed and delivered two key projects on the Manchester Metrolink on behalf of our client KeolisAmey Metrolink and Transport for Greater Manchester. Both were critical to the performance of the Eccles Line and removed the failure risk associated with legacy issues.

Parafil Rope - Similar to a scheme we completed in Dublin a few years ago on the LUAS, this programme replaced all Parafil Type F rope that is known to fail with stainless steel wire and discrete inline insulators. Works were delivered in night-time possessions to reduce disruption to passengers.

Tensioning Works - The Eccles Line was a fixed twin contact wire system with a small auto-tensioned section over Trafford Wharf Road. The system had become unreliable particularly in hot weather resulting in speed restrictions. During a disruptive 19-day blockade, we unclipped and separated the contact wires from Eccles to Salford and tensioned each wire run back to the original design values.

Due to the layout of the Eccles Line and with most of it being street running, many additional factors had to be considered such as traffic & pedestrian management, gradients, bridges, viaducts, an underpass, tight curves with high radial loads and working with older equipment.

Overall a project well planned and delivered, bringing the Eccles Line up to the standard of the Phase 3 extensions and able to provide a reliable service once again.

Widow Hill BESS - Burnley, Lancashire.

We recently completed a substantial package of civil engineering and HV cable installation works for the new energy development at Widow Hill in Burnley for our client Suir Engineering.

Our scope included earthworks and ground formation, construction of more than 40 reinforced-concrete equipment foundations, and installation of a central cable route formed from large precast-concrete troughs and associated ducting. Working closely with the specialist earthing contractor, our teams completed the backfilling and compaction of the compound before forming the final site levels ready for the external security fencing.

A key part of the project was the installation of the cable duct route between the site and the nearest electricity pylon. This required careful planning and close coordination with Electricity North West and several external stakeholders. Once the infrastructure was complete, our team installed and tested the 132KV HV cables ready for final connection and commissioning.

We also constructed the new DNO building, including extensive foundation slabs, large cast in-situ cable trenches and multiple external cable entry points. The building was completed with a brickwork facade and coated timber roof structure, together with the associated internal wall, floor and ceiling finishes.

The project brought together earthworks, reinforced concrete, drainage, ducting, cable installation, building works and specialist electrical interfaces within one coordinated delivery programme. A great example of the integrated civil engineering and energy infrastructure capability we can provide - from initial site formation through to cables ready for connection.

This week we took some of our Senior Leaders in the UK & Ireland to Donegal for a few days to discuss Pod-Trak at 2030 and beyond.

The traditional markets that we have worked in over the past 19 years have changed a lot. We continue to make a positive impact on our journey into new markets while maintaining our strong position in existing markets to support our growth plan across the Group.

A really thought provoking few days with some great feedback from the team on our plans moving forward and the part we all play in that. A huge thanks to John, Bríd and the wider team at the Blue Haven Kilcar for looking after us and the provision of top class facilities overlooking Donegal Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

A few nice additions to Pod-Trak Plant over the last few weeks to support our works on civils projects across the UK and Ireland.

Two new Hitachi ZX135US-7 excavators landed in from TBF Thompson (Garvagh) Ltd fully kitted out with X-watch RCI & height/slew restrictors and the Safety Shield Global Human Form Recognition (HFR).

We also added two new Wacker Neuson DV90-2 Dual View Dumpers supplied by Cautrac.

All four machines came into our depot in Manchester and straight to work on The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) delivering a drainage scheme for BAM UK & Ireland.

Oldfield Road - Manchester - Weeks 10 to 16

Over the past 6 weeks we have been supporting Kier Infrastructure with their track works at Oldfield Road where a new east facing turnback is being built on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Line (ELR: MVE1) adjacent to the existing Salford Hope Street (Cemex) sidings between Salford Central Station and the Oldfield Road Bridge.

PALS Summer Roadshow

Our annual summer roadshow has yet again been a great success - a busy week around the country taking the PALS Roadshow to our sites and depots with this years theme being “Keep your eye on the ball”.

Thanks to everyone who took part and to our clients for supporting it on their sites. Almost 1000 miles, 10 locations and 200 people covered in the week. This was all planned and delivered by our HSQES Team who did a great job - well done.

The fastest time to complete the game was recorded by the team at the Irlam Depot.

Week 08 Maidstone East Station, Kent.

Throughout all of Week 08 we worked closely with VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd and the Southern Renewals Enterprise to deliver a drainage scheme at Maidstone East Station during a blockade which provided 24/7 access to the line.

A challenging week for the team with just about every possible condition thrown in for good measure including some of the hottest weather ever recorded in May, excessive water flow that required contineous over pumping, below ground obstructions, and reduced digging rates due to CRT management.

The scope included;
• 252m of both 6ft and 10ft drainage through the Maidstone East Station and into the Week St Tunnel.
• Two drainage UTX's.
• Drainage outfall connection through the platform at a depth of 3m.

Works were supported by Engineering trains which required careful planning. Digging works were done with a bendy boom Liebherr A924 and a Doosan DX140 fitted with a Nox tiltrotator. Two further RRV's, each with two trailers and boxes were used for material distribution to and from the Engineering Trains. Great effort all round from everyone involved and thanks to our team, supply chain and client.

Align JV - North Portal HS2

We recently completed our Phase 2 visit at the North Portal for Align JV, marking the final stages of construction around the northern end of the Chiltern Tunnels.

A major geotechnical earthworks design was successfully delivered around the North Portal hoods. Working on inclines exceeding 21 degrees, the existing embankment was cut back to specification, followed by the placement of engineered backfill to complete and integrate with the fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) works undertaken during earlier phases.

In total, we removed over 20,000 tonnes of material from the embankment. The technical backfill incorporated a range of engineered materials, with more than 36,000 tonnes placed in accordance with design requirements around the FRC and diaphragm wall structures—bringing this significant engineering achievement to completion.

Comprehensive drainage systems were installed along the hoods, connecting to outfalls more than 8 metres below ground level, ensuring effective track drainage throughout its design life. Our work on this part of the project is now completed and we pass our thanks to all our team, supply chain and client for making this project a success.
