Week 08 Maidstone East Station, Kent.

Throughout all of Week 08 we worked closely with VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd and the Southern Renewals Enterprise to deliver a drainage scheme at Maidstone East Station during a blockade which provided 24/7 access to the line.

A challenging week for the team with just about every possible condition thrown in for good measure including some of the hottest weather ever recorded in May, excessive water flow that required contineous over pumping, below ground obstructions, and reduced digging rates due to CRT management.

The scope included;
• 252m of both 6ft and 10ft drainage through the Maidstone East Station and into the Week St Tunnel.
• Two drainage UTX's.
• Drainage outfall connection through the platform at a depth of 3m.

Works were supported by Engineering trains which required careful planning. Digging works were done with a bendy boom Liebherr A924 and a Doosan DX140 fitted with a Nox tiltrotator. Two further RRV's, each with two trailers and boxes were used for material distribution to and from the Engineering Trains. Great effort all round from everyone involved and thanks to our team, supply chain and client.

Align JV - North Portal HS2

We recently completed our Phase 2 visit at the North Portal for Align JV, marking the final stages of construction around the northern end of the Chiltern Tunnels.

A major geotechnical earthworks design was successfully delivered around the North Portal hoods. Working on inclines exceeding 21 degrees, the existing embankment was cut back to specification, followed by the placement of engineered backfill to complete and integrate with the fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) works undertaken during earlier phases.

In total, we removed over 20,000 tonnes of material from the embankment. The technical backfill incorporated a range of engineered materials, with more than 36,000 tonnes placed in accordance with design requirements around the FRC and diaphragm wall structures—bringing this significant engineering achievement to completion.

Comprehensive drainage systems were installed along the hoods, connecting to outfalls more than 8 metres below ground level, ensuring effective track drainage throughout its design life. Our work on this part of the project is now completed and we pass our thanks to all our team, supply chain and client for making this project a success.

Week 01 Easter Blockade - Bushey PSU

Over the past 7 days our OLE team have been working on the Bushey Power Supply Upgrade (PSU) project on the West Coast Mainline for our client Octavius Infrastructure and Network Rail North West & Central. The entire programme of works was developed and integrated with other disciplines in less than 12 weeks to utilise the rare extended blockade in this area which included 100hrs of access on the DC lines between Headstone Lane Station and Bushey Station.

Our scope included;
• 19,000m of redundant return conductor (RC) recoveries on the Down Fast and Up Slow lines.
• 180nr redundant RC SPS recoveries.
• Installation of new RC SPS.
• 8nr boosters taken out of service and prepared for future removal.
• Removal of all associated redundant switching and cross-track feeds from booster locations.
• Reconfiguration of 8 overlaps, including insulation removal and installation of new continuity jumpers.
• Installation of HV cables across portal booms at two locations.

A project workshop was set up at our Uxbridge depot to manage all material buildup in the weeks leading up to the blockade with teams working flat out to get materials ready in the order they were required - all labelled up and transported to site.

Big thanks to all involved across our internal OLE and Plant teams, our supply chain for labour, plant and materials - reduced lead times for materials being a key driver for successful delivery.

Botley Road, Oxford - Kier

Over the past few months and in particular the last week, our team have played a significant role in the successful replacement of Botley Road bridge at Oxford Station supporting our client Kier Infrastructure.

Preparation works included the installation of a temporary cable bridge to support the cables while the bridge was removed along with civils work to support the blockade.

Core works during the blockade included the removal of all four tracks, excavation to expose old bridge deck, track reinstatement, welding, stressing, tamping and coper adjustments. A huge volume of work in a constrained site with tight timescales all achieved and a right time handback - thanks to all involved and our supply chain.

In the early hours of Thursday morning (NR Week 42) electric trains successfully passed through the West Coast Main Line worksite in Shap, Cumbria where our team had been working on wire renewals for 28 shifts in a row. Through really cold temperatures as low as -13, winds exceeding 60mph at times, rain, sleet and snow the team powered on and replaced over 25,000m of contact and catenary wires, along with design adjustments and ancillary works.

Huge credit to everyone involved, especially given the weather conditions in an area that is well known for it. Big thanks to everyone including our supply chain for the successful delivery.

A great example of what can be achieved when the access is available, working closely with our client Amey on their NW&C Framework.
