1️⃣ A bulge or bubble on the sidewall. That tyre needs replacing, not repairing
2️⃣ A cut or split in the sidewall, or a slow loss of air over the next day or two
3️⃣ A dented or cracked wheel rim, often on the inside where you can't easily see it
4️⃣ Steering that now pulls to one side, or a new vibration at speed
⚠️ Don't drive far on a damaged tyre. A bulge can fail without warning
✅ Take photos of the pothole, the damage and the exact location, plus the date and time

Tread depth is the single easiest thing to check at home, yet it is the one drivers put off. In Highgate, Archway, Muswell Hill and along North Hill, wet leaves and steep cambers make grip matter more than ever.

How the 20p test works: slot a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible above the rubber, the tread is close to the limit and needs measuring properly with a gauge. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way around.

While you are crouching down, also check:

• Pressures when the tyres are cold, against the door pillar or handbook figures
• Cuts, bulges, lumps or objects stuck in the tread
• Valve caps, and any perishing or cracking around the valve base
• That nothing is trapped between the tyre and the wheel

• A cut, split or tear in the sidewall, however shallow it looks
