Cold Weather & Cold Locomotives Don’t Mix ❄️

With the recent cold snap across the UK, we’ve seen first-hand just how critical it is to run locomotives up regularly during low temperatures.

So far this year alone, Rail Engineering Solutions has already attended and charged over six locomotives, many of which had been standing in cold conditions.

Low temperatures significantly increase the risk of:

Flat batteries
Moisture build-up in air systems
Seized components
Start-up failures when units are suddenly required for service
Running locos up isn’t just good practice — it’s a preventative maintenance necessity, particularly through winter months.

Our teams have been exceptionally busy, supporting operators and owners to get assets back online quickly, safely, and compliantly, helping to avoid avoidable delays, call-outs, and damage.

You’ll be out in the field, carrying out inspections, maintenance, and fault-finding on a wide range of locomotives and rolling stock. From scheduled maintenance to emergency support, you’ll help keep the railway safe and operational.

✔️ NVQ Level 3 (Mechanical/Electrical) or equivalent
✔️ Strong rolling stock experience
✔️ Dual-skilled approach – mechanical & electrical

The Greatest Gathering – A Proud Moment for RES

As the doors close on The Greatest Gathering in Derby, we want to take a moment to reflect on what was truly a landmark event for the UK rail industry.

Held at the historic Litchurch Lane Works, this event brought together over 140 locomotives, thousands of attendees, and countless rail professionals – and we were proud to be right at the heart of it.

🚆 Having our locomotive on display alongside some of the most iconic machines in railway history was an honour. From the heritage of the Flying Scotsman to the innovation of today’s fleet, the event perfectly captured the progress of our industry – and the role companies like RES continue to play in its future.

We’d like to extend our thanks to Alstom and all involved in delivering such a well-organised, inspiring weekend. It was a pleasure to engage with fellow engineers, families, and future talent – particularly in the STEM hub, which showcased the exciting opportunities within rail.

47715 basking in the sun at Keighley 💪💪💪

47715 took centre stage at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Diesel Gala last weekend – and to say it was amazing would be an understatement.

Both 47715 and her sister loco 47714 performed absolutely faultlessly across the event. It’s always something special to see older assets not just running, but delivering rock-solid performance throughout.

This is a great reminder of how reliable these locomotives can be when they’re properly maintained and cared for. Yes, things can go wrong – that’s the nature of machinery – but we do everything in our power to minimise those risks.

Watching both locos perform so well was incredibly rewarding and a true credit to my team and others who support and maintain them behind the scenes.

A proud weekend for everyone involved – hard work, dedication, and engineering done right. 💪💪💪

🚨 Class 47 Convoy in Action! 🚨
Yesterday, RailAdventure UK Ltd successfully moved Class 47 No. 47715 from her regular home at Chinnor to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, with a key stop at the Wensleydale Railway to collect sister loco 47714 en route.

This move was only made possible thanks to the support of the incredible team at Rail Adventure, who kindly allowed us to be added to the original convoy – a perfect example of collaboration across the rail industry.

Moves like this may look straightforward, but they require precision planning, route coordination, and exceptional teamwork at every stage. Huge credit goes to everyone involved – from operations and logistics to the ground crews at Chinnor, Wensleydale Railway and KWVR Friends
