Understanding the Thermal Cycle š²š§±
The principle of thermal mass can be understood through a simple cycle:
1ļøā£ Absorb: Exposed clay brick can absorb heat as internal temperatures rise during the day.
2ļøā£ Store: The heat is stored within the masonry, helping to slow changes in internal temperature.
3ļøā£ Release: As conditions cool, stored heat is gradually released back into the surrounding environment.
4ļøā£ Repeat: Where appropriate, night ventilation can help remove released heat and cool the thermal mass ready for the following day.
Thermal mass is an inherent property of clay brick, but how effectively it contributes to building performance depends on the wider design, including insulation, ventilation, glazing, orientation and shading.
