🔩 A2-50, A2-70, A4-70, A4-80… What does it all mean? 🤔

Ever wondered what those numbers on stainless steel fasteners actually mean?

A2 = the most common stainless steel group, typically 304
A4 = group of stainless steel with higher corrosion resistance, typically 316

And the number?

50 = minimum tensile strength 500 N/mm²
70 = minimum tensile strength 700 N/mm²
80 = minimum tensile strength 800 N/mm²

💪 A4-80 has a minimum tensile strength of 800 N/mm² - the same minimum tensile strength as an 8.8 grade steel bolt.

👉 The number after the dash tells you the mechanical strength -not the corrosion resistance.

Now you know! 🔩 👀

(💡 1 MPa = 1 N/mm²
MPa = megapascals
N/mm² = newtons per square millimetre)

It’s easy to think that if two threads have the same TPI (threads per inch), they must be the same thread.

Like BSW (Whitworth) and UNC, for example.

You can have the same diameter AND the same TPI, but the thread forms are different:

🔹 BSW (Whitworth) → 55° thread angle
🔹 UNC → 60° thread angle

So a 1/4" BSW thread and a 1/4" UNC thread can both be 20 TPI… but that doesn’t make them the same thread.

Same TPI = Same thread?

“This screw is not stainless because it’s fully magnetic.”

We get this one quite a lot – but being magnetic does NOT automatically mean a fastener isn't stainless steel.

While the most commonly used austenitic stainless steels are generally non-magnetic, there are different grades and classes of stainless steel, some of which ARE magnetic, such as ferritic and martensitic stainless steels.

Even some austenitic stainless steels can become slightly magnetic through processes such as cold forming or working.

So, PLEASE stop using magnets to determine if a fastener is stainless or not!! 😂

A customer popped in with these two very well-used nuts and asked us to replace them with shiny stainless steel ones.

So, 2 replacement nuts later, he was on his way. 👍
