When different metals are connected and exposed to water, an electrochemical reaction can occur. The more active metal corrodes first, while the less active metal is protected. The anode is therefore deliberately designed to deteriorate in place of the propeller, shaft, rudder, hull fitting, engine component or steel structure.

The anode is not intended to remain in perfect condition. Its gradual deterioration is evidence that it is doing its job. However, once too much of the anode has been consumed, it can no longer provide sufficient protection and must be replaced.
