Lestercast Hosts CHASAC Meeting - Driving Health & Safety Forward in the Foundry Sector

On 21st May 2026, Lestercast Ltd - Investment Casting Solutions had the pleasure of hosting the latest meeting of the Castings Health and Safety Advisory Committee (CHASAC), bringing together a mix of industry professionals both on-site and online to share knowledge, experiences, and future direction for health and safety across the UK foundry sector.

What is CHASAC and Why Does It Matter?
CHASAC (Castings Health and Safety Advisory Committee) is a long-established, HSE-led strategic group that has been supporting the foundry industry since 1978 (Formerly FIAC). It brings together key stakeholders including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Cast Metals Federation (CMF), employers, and trade unions, all working towards a shared goal—improving health, safety, and wellbeing across the sector.

It also plays a key role in shaping initiatives such as SHIFT (Safety and Health in Foundry Targets), which provides practical tools, guidance, and shared learning for foundries across the UK.

Being part of CHASAC is both a responsibility and a privilege. At Lestercast, we are proud to have representation on the committee through Theresa Johnston, our Health, Safety and Environment Officer & Cheryl Ross, our HR Administrator, offering insight from both perspectives as they work collaboratively in many aspects of their roles, providing a broader, more holistic perspective on workplace wellbeing. In particular, leading one of the national objectives places us in a position to actively contribute to positive change across the wider industry—not just within our own organisation.

Bringing the Industry Together at Lestercast
The meeting brought together a smaller in-person group of foundry representatives, alongside attendees joining remotely. We were pleased to welcome Richard Heath (The Cast Metals Federation, CMF), Martin Giles (HM Inspector of Health and Safety, HSE), and additional contributors including occupational hygiene specialists.
Following the meeting, attendees were invited to take part in a site tour led by Russell Gray, our Technical Manager, providing insight into the Lestercast investment casting process and how health and safety is managed in practice.
Feedback from the day was extremely positive, with appreciation expressed for both the discussions and the opportunity to see our operations first-hand.

Last week, Lestercast took to Hollywood Bowl for an unforgettable night out 🎳🍹 🍺

From strikes and gutter balls to lots of laughter, it was great to spend quality time together outside the office.

To finish the night properly, the crew headed over to Chiquito’s for a well-earned feast 🌮🔥 Fajitas, burgers, cocktails, and plenty of banter made the perfect ending to an amazing evening.

Good food, great company and lots of laughs - nights like this are what it’s all about!

Congratulations to newbie; Omar for winning the bowling trophy 🏆 with a top score! 🎳

Today in our R&D room, our Methods Engineer, Dennis Hewitt, is working closely with our apprentice, Kye Smith, providing hands-on training with our Artec handheld 3D scanner.

Kye is developing his skills by capturing detailed data from a sample component and learning how to process high-resolution point cloud data using Artec Studio software. This practical experience is a key part of building the next generation of engineering talent within our team.

Our advanced 3D scanning capabilities play a crucial role in supporting investment casting projects, delivering precise digital models, and helping our customers move efficiently from concept to production.

Investing in both cutting-edge technology and people ensures we continue to deliver the highest standards in quality and innovation.

On June 27th, members of our Lestercast team will be taking on an incredible challenge - the Trek26 in support of Alzheimer's Society.

Colin Caine, Marc Healey, Russell Gray, Alan Kewley, and Karthik Shastri will be tackling a demanding 26-mile route through the Peak District. This is a full endurance trek featuring over 1,100m of elevation and challenging terrain whilst taking in landmarks such as Chatsworth House, Curbar Edge, Monsal Head Viaduct, and the Headstone Tunnel, before finishing in Bakewell.

They’re doing this to support a cause that touches so many lives. Every donation helps provide vital support, research, and hope for people affected by dementia.
If you’re able to contribute, no matter the amount, it would mean a great deal to the team and to everyone who benefits from the work of Alzheimer’s Society.

Please support them using the link - https://www.justgiving.com/team/lcpacemakers?utm_medium=TE&utm_source=CL

Thank you for your generosity. 🙏

Wishing the team the very best of luck as they take on this challenge - we’re all behind you every step of the way! 💪

Congratulations to Lisa Hunt, our new Quality Engineer, on completing her incredible 14th Swimathon!
Taking on a 5K challenge (200 lengths), Lisa swam alongside friends and family as part Swimathon Foundation 2026 - the 40th anniversary of this amazing event supporting Marie Curie UK and Cancer Research UK (CRUK) research.

For Lisa, this is more than just a swim. Each year she dives in with purpose, honouring the memory of her Grandad, Mum, and Goddaughter. Their love and strength carry her through every stroke, inspiring her to keep pushing forward and go the extra length.

We’re so proud of your dedication and determination, Lisa - both in and out of the water. Thank you for making a real difference and continuing to make waves for such important causes. 💙

Tess Johnston presents a case study on Stress in the Workplace at the SHIFT Forum.
On Wednesday 4th March, Lestercast’s Health & Safety Officer, Tess Johnston, HR Administrator, Cheryl Ross, and Technical Manager, Russell Gray, attended the meeting run by the Safety and Health in Foundries Targets Initiative (SHIFT) for the UK foundry industry. These forums are a key part of the initiative and are typically held three times per year for member companies to share safety information and best practice.

The forum is a health and safety knowledge-sharing event for foundries, bringing together:

🔹 Foundry managers and safety professionals
🔹 Industry experts and suppliers
🔹 Representatives from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
🔹 Members of the Cast Metals Federation and related industry groups

The main aim is to reduce accidents and occupational illness in foundries by sharing practical experiences and learning from across the industry. The foundry sector has historically experienced higher injury rates than many other manufacturing industries, so initiatives such as SHIFT play an important role in raising safety standards and promoting continuous improvement.

While each meeting has a different agenda, forums typically include:

🔸 Incident reviews and lessons learned
🔸 Health risks in foundries
🔸 Updates from regulators
🔸 Best-practice presentations
🔸 Opportunities for industry collaboration

SHIFT forums help the industry collectively improve safety performance. Since the initiative began in 2003, collaboration between foundries, unions and regulators has helped to significantly reduce accident rates in the sector.

Alongside traditional safety concerns such as physical hazards, the HSE is placing greater emphasis on supporting workers’ mental well-being and managing workplace stress.

During the forum, Lestercast’s Tess Johnston delivered a case study presentation on managing mental health in the workplace, sharing the company’s approach to supporting employee wellbeing and raising awareness of mental health.

With mental health now recognised as one of the five major focus areas for the HSE, the presentation contributed to the wider industry discussion on how foundries can better support their workforce and create healthier working environments.
