Why more commercial sites are moving to electric gates

It's not just homes. We're doing more and more work for businesses who've decided a manual gate, or no gate at all, isn't enough anymore.

๐Ÿ”ธ Controlled access means only the people who should be on site actually get on site
๐Ÿ”ธ Integration with intercoms and keypads means staff don't need to leave a desk to let a delivery in
๐Ÿ”ธ A visible electric gate is a genuine deterrent, not just a formality
๐Ÿ”ธ Out of hours access can be managed remotely rather than relying on someone being on site
๐Ÿ”ธ Works alongside existing CCTV and alarm systems rather than as a separate system to manage

If security at your site still relies on a padlock and a bit of hope, it's worth talking to us.

Autumn is when gate problems you didn't know you had start showing up

Leaves in the track. Colder mornings slowing the motor down. The first proper frost catching a hinge that's been quietly stiffening up all summer without anyone noticing.

None of it happens overnight. It builds up gradually until one morning the gate that's worked fine for months suddenly doesn't want to open properly.

A quick service before the weather turns properly is a lot less hassle than an emergency callout in November, when everything takes longer and nobody wants to be stood outside fixing a gate in the rain.

If it's been a while since yours was looked at, now's a sensible time to get ahead of it.

Do you actually need planning permission for an electric gate?

It's one of the first questions almost every customer asks us, and the honest answer is: usually not, but not always.

In most cases, a gate up to one metre high next to a road, or two metres elsewhere, doesn't need planning permission. Go above that, or if your property is listed or in a conservation area, and the rules change.

Visibility at the entrance matters too. Gates opening directly onto a road need to be positioned so they don't obstruct the view for drivers or pedestrians, which sometimes affects how a gate is hung or where it sits on the drive.

We check all of this as part of every quote, so you're never left guessing or, worse, finding out after installation that something needs to change.

If you're planning a new gate and want to know where you stand, get in touch and we'll talk you through it.

Five signs your gate motor is on its way out

A gate motor rarely fails without warning. It usually gives you a few clues first, and catching them early is a lot cheaper than an emergency call-out once it's stopped working altogether.

๐Ÿ”ธ A grinding or straining noise as the gate opens or closes
๐Ÿ”ธ Noticeably slower movement than it used to have
๐Ÿ”ธ The remote working sometimes but not always
๐Ÿ”ธ The gate stopping partway and needing a manual push to finish
๐Ÿ”ธ More frequent resets or error lights on the control unit

Any one of these on its own isn't necessarily urgent, but a combination of them usually means the motor is heading toward the end of its working life.

If any of this sounds familiar, get in touch and we'll take a look before it becomes a bigger problem.

Off-grid drive? Solar powered gates are more capable than people expect

Not every driveway has an easy run to mains power, and a solar powered gate is often a far simpler answer than trenching cable across a garden or field.

Modern solar systems comfortably run a gate through daily use, storing enough charge to keep working through a stretch of grey British weather too.

They suit rural properties, long driveways and anywhere a power supply would mean disruptive, expensive groundwork just to get a gate moving.

If mains power to your gate isn't straightforward, ask us about solar before assuming it isn't an option.

Once you've settled on sliding or swing, the next big decision is what your gate is actually made from. Each material brings something different to a driveway.

Here's how they compare:

๐Ÿ”ธ Metal and iron gates give a strong, traditional look and are built to last for decades
๐Ÿ”ธ Wooden gates suit period properties and bring a warmer, more natural feel
๐Ÿ”ธ Composite gates give you the look of wood without the ongoing upkeep
๐Ÿ”ธ Aluminium gates are lightweight, low maintenance and well suited to modern properties

We manufacture every gate in-house, so whichever material suits your property, it's built to your exact specification rather than picked off a shelf.

๐Ÿšช Not sure which material is right for you? Get in touch and we'll talk it through.

When people think about commercial security, the main gate usually gets all the attention. But a proper perimeter is about more than just the entrance.

For business premises, industrial units and commercial sites, we look at the whole picture:

๐Ÿ”ธ Automatic barriers to control vehicle access without holding up deliveries
๐Ÿ”ธ Bollards to protect entrances, loading bays and pedestrian areas from vehicle incursion
๐Ÿ”ธ Access control that gives different levels of entry to staff, visitors and contractors
๐Ÿ”ธ Everything working together, so your site is secure at every point, not just the front gate

Whether it's a warehouse, retail unit or industrial yard, we design systems that work for how your site actually operates day to day.

August is nearly done and autumn isn't far behind. Before the wetter, darker months set in, it's worth giving your gate and access system a proper once-over.

A few things worth checking now, before the weather turns:

๐Ÿ”ธ Hinges, tracks and motors running smoothly, before rain and cold start putting extra strain on them
๐Ÿ”ธ Lighting and photocells working properly for the darker evenings ahead
๐Ÿ”ธ Intercoms and access codes still working as they should
๐Ÿ”ธ A service booked in now, ahead of the usual autumn rush for repairs

A well maintained gate takes whatever the British weather throws at it in its stride.

A quick check now can save you an emergency call-out in November.

One of the first questions we ask every new customer isn't about colour or finish, it's whether a sliding or a swing gate actually suits their driveway.

Both do the same job, but the right choice comes down to your space:

๐Ÿ”ธ Swing gates suit driveways with plenty of room in front, and often give the more traditional look
๐Ÿ”ธ Sliding gates are the better option for sloped drives or where space is tight
๐Ÿ”ธ Sliding gates keep the full width of the driveway clear when open, useful for parking right up to the gate
๐Ÿ”ธ Swing gates are usually the simpler mechanism to maintain long term

There's no single right answer, it comes down to your driveway, your property, and how you use the space day to day.

๐Ÿšช Not sure which is right for you? Get in touch and we'll talk it through.

An electric gate is a powerful bit of kit, so getting the safety right matters just as much as getting the design right.

Every gate we install is force tested and certified to DHF and GateSafe standards, with safety built in as standard, not an optional extra.

๐Ÿ”ธ Photocells that stop the gate if something or someone is in the way
๐Ÿ”ธ Safety edges that detect contact and reverse the gate immediately
๐Ÿ”ธ Force limiting so the gate can't close with excessive pressure
๐Ÿ”ธ Manual release in case of a power cut, so you're never locked in or out

If you've got children or pets, or just want to know your gate is doing its job properly, this is exactly what you should be asking any installer about.

โœ… Get in touch if you'd like a safety check on your current setup.
