THE STORY BEHIND DJM SHEET METAL 🔧🧡

Every business has a story… this is ours.

Dave grew up in the sheet metal industry, working his way through different shops before joining his dad at just 17 years old. That’s where the foundations of his knowledge, work ethic, and passion for the trade really began.

Then in 2007, he met Katie.

Katie’s path was completely different – starting out in the beauty industry, but always having that drive to try new things. From buying and selling horses to running her own dog walking business, she’s always had that entrepreneurial mindset.

Years later, when the original owners of DJM decided to move back to Scotland, Dave and Katie saw an opportunity… and took it.

They bought DJM Sheet Metal – and haven’t looked back since. Despite what some might think, it wasn’t handed to them on a plate; it was fully paid for, a real investment and a big commitment. From day one, they took that risk and built it into what it is today.

Over the last four years, we’ve completely transformed the business. Pushing it forward, modernising it, and growing it into what it is today – busier than ever.

From starting with just one small pickup…
To now running multiple large vans travelling the full length of the UK – from the top of Scotland right down to London.

We’ve taken on huge projects, including:

🚂 A brand-new WWII train cab for a museum in York

We’ve said goodbye to some clients along the way, but also welcomed a huge number of new ones – and we’re incredibly grateful for every single bit of support.

This journey hasn’t been easy… but it’s been worth it.

Another great job completed this week at DJM Sheet Metal 🔶⚫

We’ve just finished manufacturing 15 bespoke cages for a new housing development, designed to protect ventilation systems while keeping everything neat, secure, and built to last.

All work was fabricated in-house by our skilled team, ensuring top quality from start to finish. From measuring and cutting through to assembly and finishing, everything is handled under one roof so we can guarantee precision and durability on every job we send out.

Tools down, vans loaded! 🇬🇧🛠️

It’s been a massive week in the Leeds workshop, and we’re signing off shortly with a full house.

The DJM vans are loaded and ready to head out with a huge variety of kit—from bespoke stainless steel and non-standard grille boxes to safety-critical fire-rated ducting. Whether it’s a local drop or a nationwide delivery, we’re making sure every piece of precision-engineered metal arrives on site and on time.

The lads have done the graft, the clients are happy, and the shutters are rolling down soon.

5-star safety for the Deansgate Hotel 🏨🔥

We’re mid-way through the week and the workshop is in full swing finishing off the complete ducting package for our latest project at the Deansgate Hotel.

On a job this size, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. We’ve been busy fabricating a mix of systems to meet the specific needs of the building:

Fire-Rated Ducting: The safety-critical infrastructure designed to provide 60 to 240 minutes of integrity and insulation. This is what keeps escape routes clear and protected.

Non-Fire-Rated Ducting: The high-quality standard ventilation that keeps the air moving and the environment comfortable for guests.

Whether it’s life-saving safety kit or high-performance air distribution, every piece has been precision-checked right here in our Leeds workshop. From those raw steel rolls on Monday to these finished systems today, it’s all about getting the spec 100% right before it hits the site in Manchester.

Starting the week from the ground up 🏗️🦾

There is nothing like a fresh delivery of steel rolls to get the Monday morning energy going.

This is where it all begins for every project that leaves our Leeds workshop. Whether these rolls are destined to become high-spec kitchen extraction for a spot like Eggslut Manchester, or safety-critical fire-rated ducting for the Deansgate Hotel, it all starts with this raw material.

It’s going to be a big week of cutting, folding, and welding as the lads turn these rolls into precision-engineered kit. We’ve got some tight deadlines to hit, but there’s something satisfying about seeing the shop floor fully stocked and ready for the graft.

Every job we do starts right here. Before we even touch a sheet of steel, it's all about the drawings.

In the world of bespoke fabrication, "near enough" just doesn't cut it. Whether it’s specialised ducting or a full kitchen fit-out, we map out every single millimetre. Getting the plan right means no headaches for the lads on-site and a perfect fit first time, every time.

It’s been another big week of turning these designs into real-world kit, but the screens are off and the tools are away now.

From Leeds to London: Specialised kit for Harris Academy 🏫🌬️

Not every job is a standard size, and that’s where we really hit our stride.

We’ve just finished a batch of bespoke attenuators and non-standard grille boxes destined for Harris Academy in London. In a school environment, acoustics and airflow are everything—you need systems that are quiet enough for a classroom but powerful enough to keep the air fresh.

These aren't "off-the-shelf" components. Because the school had specific spatial and acoustic requirements, we fabricated these grille boxes to non-standard dimensions right here in our Leeds workshop to ensure a perfect fit on-site.

It’s another great example of how we support major educational infrastructure projects across the UK. Whether it's the capital or right here in Yorkshire, if the spec is unique, DJM has it covered.
