π New Project Case Study: Wigan Springs Depot Washdown Facility
We are pleased to showcase another successful project delivered by Cairn Cross for Network Rail, the design and delivery of a new automated underframe wash facility at Wigan Springs Depot for the MPV Sandite rolling stock fleet.
The project involved the construction of a modern washdown facility, incorporating civil engineering works, drainage infrastructure, mechanical and electrical installations, testing, and staff training.
The new facility was developed to replace outdated washing arrangements and provide a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible cleaning solution for Network Railβs fleet. The works included advanced washdown technology, wastewater treatment systems, service roads, track realignment, and supporting infrastructure.
Delivered within a live rail environment, the project required careful planning and collaboration to minimise disruption to depot operations. The team also successfully managed complex challenges, including uncharted ground obstructions and the safe removal and disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM).
Key project achievements included:
β
Delivery of a pioneering automated undercarriage and side-wash facility
β
Improved health, safety, and environmental performance
β
Enhanced depot maintenance efficiency and operational capability
β
Successful delivery within programme requirements
β
Zero accidents across 24,750 man-hours worked
A huge well done to everyone involved in delivering this important project and supporting Network Railβs continued commitment to safe, efficient, and sustainable rail operations.
