𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗ate - 2025

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀:
A specialist demolition and groundworks project at 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗥𝗦 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 carried out on behalf of 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 within a live 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 facility.

The works formed part of a wider site upgrade and included demolition of existing structures, deep excavation, reinforced concrete construction, ducting installations, draw pits, flagging, and associated reinstatement works.

The project involved the demolition of the existing E&I building, partial demolition of the old governor building, removal and reconstruction of valve chamber structures, and construction of a new kiosk base complete with associated service ducting and access infrastructure. Additional works included confined space operations, temporary works for deep excavations, brickwork, and full site clearance and reinstatement.

Due to the high-risk nature of the environment, all excavation works were undertaken under strict permit controls with continuous CAT & Genny scanning, hand digging around known services, and adherence to 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀'𝘀 safe digging procedures. Temporary works and excavation support systems were implemented where required to maintain safe access and ground stability throughout the works.

All operatives on site held the relevant utility sector competencies, including 𝗘𝗨𝗦𝗥 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗔 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, with trained 𝗖𝗣𝗖𝗦 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, banksmen, and competent persons overseeing all lifting, excavation, and demolition activities.

The project was delivered with a strong focus on safety, coordination, and compliance within a live gas infrastructure environment while maintaining programme and quality requirements throughout.

As part of the UK's broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable business practices, we here at Cummins have been working hard to implement our own changes. 🟢 Source resources locally where possible and use local yards to handle onsite waste. Reducing the amount of fuel used in transporting material over long distances.

🟢 Ride sharing, limiting the number of active vehicles being used where multiple team members are heading to the same site.

🟢 Employing the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil or HVO for our fleet. A fuel that can reduce emissions by up to 90% when compared to diesel during operations.

🟢 Recycling waste materials was possible, turning waste stone into recycled aggregates.

By working towards these measures, we aim to be a Net Zero business by 2050. Building the infrastructure for Cummins to operate sustainably for years to come!

Good foundations are key to ensuring a project succeeds. There is no getting around that. 👈

The leaning tower of New York (161 Maiden Lane) is a good case in point.

During construction, the company involved used a soil-improvement method rather than the traditional method of creating deep pilings to support the base of the massive skyscraper. It was supposed to be a cost-saving measure, but because of this, the weight of the building caused a three-inch lean to the North.

Since then, the teams working on the tower have taken to uneven concrete pours to balance out the uneven weight. Not just that, the general contractor company involved at the time, Pizzarotti, has claimed that the lean had caused issues installing the glass curtain wall.

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲:
- Non-functioning windows
- Faulty elevators
- Bad waterproofing

Ultimately, these complications and lawsuits would lead to millions in costs, settlements and additional contractors hired to complete the work. The building remains unfinished to this day.

All of this due to an attempt to use an alternate method to lay the foundations of the building, in an effort to cut costs.

If any lesson is to be taken away, it is that fixing a mistake later costs twice as much as preventing a mistake now.

𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 - Utilities - Deep Excavation
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗ate - February 2026

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: Cummins carried out two deep excavations, at a depth of 3.5 meters, onto a 600mm medium-pressure gas main supplying 14,000 houses in the area. The excavations were conducted to address a severe gas escape that required attention. The work was conducted adjacent to a busy carriageway and railway line in central Leeds. The team operated effectively and resolved the issue within good time, helping to ensure the continued supply to the local area and protecting the nearby transit lines from potential risks.
