🐄 Kirkburton First School – On the farm!

Last week we welcomed two brilliant groups from Kirkburton First School onto the farm. They got stuck into real jobs, asked cracking questions, and saw first‑hand how good food is produced 🌾.

The children:

🧈 Churned their own butter — cream, elbow‑grease, and plenty of giggles

🥚 Collected eggs — learning how to handle the hens gently and spot which hens lay which colours

🌱 Planted seeds — taking home their own pots

🐮 Met the cows — and learned about feed, bedding, daily care, and why healthy cattle matter for healthy food

🚜 Explored farm machinery — tractors, feeders, and the kit that keeps a working farm running

✏️ Chalked farm pictures on our massive blackboard — some brilliant tractor 🚜 cow 🐄 and chicken 🐔 art appeared!

It’s exactly why we open the gates: to help local children understand the land around them and the work that goes into producing honest, traceable food.

We’ve put new signs up around the farm following the updated Dogs on Leads law. Thank you to everyone who’s already helping keep livestock safe — it really does make a difference.

With the avian flu housing being lifted on 9th April, a quick reminder that hens are classed as livestock, and ours have access to all our fields. Please keep dogs on a lead anywhere livestock may be present, even if you can’t see them straight away.

We appreciate everyone doing their bit to keep the countryside safe for animals, walkers, and neighbours alike.

🐂 Scene of the day on Moor Lane:
Our stock bull Wesley strutted out onto the fresh spring grass like he’d just been released onto the starting line at a racecourse. Head up, tail swishing, full of himself and absolutely convinced the world was watching.

He took two steps, did a little hop, and then set off in a slow-motion gallop that suggested he was aiming for the Cheltenham Gold Cup rather than the top of the field. The cows were delighted to be out… but Wesley? Wesley thought he was the main event.

🌱 A big day at Burton Beef!

The cows have finally been let out of their winter housing and are back on the fresh spring grass — kicking, bucking, and loving every second. It’s one of our favourite sights of the year and a proper sign that spring has arrived in Highburton.

🐕 And now they’re out, this is a really important reminder:
The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025 is now in force (from 16 March 2026). This new law brings in much tougher rules and penalties for dog owners walking near livestock.

Here’s what it means for anyone using the public footpaths through our fields:

⚠️ **KEEP DOGS ON A SHORT LEAD**
This is now a legal requirement if livestock are in the field or even nearby.

🚫 It is an offence if a dog:
- Chases or attacks livestock.
- Causes distress — this includes running loose or barking.

🔒 Penalties are now much tougher:
- Fines are unlimited.
- Police have the power to seize dogs.

Even the friendliest dog can cause panic, injury, or pregnancy loss in cattle — especially now the cows and calves are freshly turned out and still settling.

Thank you for helping us protect our animals and keep our fields safe for everyone who enjoys it.

We’re excited to welcome schools back to Burton Beef for another season of hands‑on learning and outdoor adventure. Our farm visits give children the chance to experience real farm life in a fun, safe and memorable way.

During their visit, children can:
🐄 Meet our animals and learn how we care for them
🌱 Get involved in hands‑on seasonal activities
🚜 Explore tractors and machinery up close
🌾 Discover where food comes from and how farms look after the environment

Every visit is tailored to your group, and we’re conveniently based in the HD8 area.

📅 Only a handful of funded places remain for 2026, so early booking is recommended.
