Last week, we exhibited at the Instrumentation, Analysis & Testing Exhibition at Silverstone Circuit for the first time, and we werenโ€™t disappointed. ๐Ÿ

With over 80 exhibitors and 300+ visitors attending throughout the day, there was a real sense of collaboration across the halls from the moment the doors opened. ๐Ÿค

Over the past few months, our team has invested time into designing a showcase that reflected our capabilities and the industries we support. From the development of the stand itself through to the products and demonstrations on display, every detail was carefully considered to create something engaging and practical for visitors.

One of the most valuable parts of the day was the conversations we had around bespoke solutions. Events like this are a reminder of how important face-to-face interaction is within engineering, especially when discussing complex challenges.

A huge thank you to the Engineering Integrity Society for being such excellent hosts, and to everybody who visited our stand, spoke with our team and supported the event. It was great to see so much passion for the industry in one place. ๐Ÿ‘

Weโ€™ll be sharing more details on the products and solutions showcased at the exhibition over the coming weeks, including case studies and behind-the-scenes content, so keep an eye on our website and Jack Chester's page.

This week, we officially introduced a brand new, custom-designed torque calibration frame to our facility, significantly expanding our capabilities in a range of engineering applications.

With the ability to apply up to 5000 Nm in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions, alongside programmable control and dwell functionality, the new system enables highly precise and repeatable calibration procedures aligned with recognised industry standards. โœ…

In addition to increased capacity, this investment strengthens our ability to support customers with improved flexibility, efficient turnaround times, and a seamless service across both force and torque measurement.

It also marks another important milestone as we progress towards accredited torque calibration alongside our existing UKAS accredited tension and compression services.

Exciting times ahead. ๐Ÿš€

Introducing Team Bath Racing Electric (TBRe), a key partner in our mission to educate the next generation of engineers, and introduce them to the fascinating world of load measurement - because having true visibility of whatโ€™s happening on track is what takes design optimisation to the next level. ๐Ÿ“Š

So what are we doing exactly? Among other IMechE Formula Student teams, weโ€™ll be supporting TBRe with strain gauging, helping them gain a clearer understanding of the forces acting on their race car in real-world conditions.

Initially, weโ€™ll be focusing on suspension components including pushrods and wishbones, turning them into precision force transducers to unlock valuable performance insights.

Weโ€™re not simply supplying strain gauges and general installation consumables either. The team will be joining us at our facility to learn both the theory and practical application, before working live alongside us on components from their multi-award-winning car. ๐ŸŽ๏ธ

This is just the start of a long-term partnership! Weโ€™re looking forward to seeing how they progress this season and beyond, with us firmly by their side.

The accuracy of a load cell isnโ€™t just about the strain gauges, electronics, or calibration - it starts with the machining. โš™๏ธ

This is because the geometry of the metal spring element controls how it deforms under load. Even the smallest variation in thickness, symmetry, or surface finish can affect how strain is distributed, and ultimately, how accurate the reading is.

In precise applications, machining tolerances are often measured in microns. This is because inconsistent machining can lead to non-linear outputs, poor repeatability, or long-term drift. ๐Ÿ“Š

Itโ€™s a good reminder that precision engineering lies behind every measurement.

At our facility, we take this one step further. With our own Mazak CNC machines, weโ€™re able to control the entire process. From initial design and precision machining through to strain gauging and final calibration, all in-house. ๐Ÿญ

That means tighter quality control, faster turnaround times, and complete confidence in the performance of every load cell we produce. โœ…

Weโ€™re heading to Silverstone ๐Ÿ

On 12th May, weโ€™ll be exhibiting at the Instrumentation, Analysis & Testing Exhibition, hosted by the Engineering Integrity Society at Silverstone Circuit.

This will be our first time exhibiting at the event, and our first return to industry exhibitions in quite some time. Over the past few years, weโ€™ve been focused on growing our capabilities, strengthening our in-house offering, and refining what we do. Now feels like the perfect moment to step forward and share that more widely. ๐ŸŒ

Weโ€™ve put a lot of thought into our stand this year and canโ€™t wait to see it come together. Whether youโ€™ve got a specific project in mind, a challenge youโ€™re trying to solve, or just want to explore whatโ€™s possible, weโ€™d be glad to talk.

If youโ€™re attending, come and find us at Stand 59.

โœ… Another successful ISO 9001 surveillance audit! This time conducted by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

We passed with zero non-conformities, meaning the audit identified no deviations from the ISO 9001 standard. In other words, our processes, documentation, and quality controls were all found to meet the required standards without issue.

This audit was significant for us, as itโ€™s our first ISO 9001 audit conducted by BSI, following our recent transition. We took the decision to work with BSI moving forward, because their approach closely aligns with our own brand values and long-term goals.

Such a result reinforces something that sits at the core of what we do: consistent quality and reliability. Every one of our products depends on rigorous processes, careful calibration, and continuous improvement. Maintaining a strong quality management system helps ensure that every solution we deliver meets the highest standards expected in load measurement applications.

๐Ÿ‘ A big thank you to our team for their continued dedication to maintaining and improving our systems.

Compression is compression, right? If the force is axial, why should it matter which face itโ€™s applied to?

In reality, it can significantly affect performance ๐ŸŽฏ

Most compression load cells are designed with a defined load surface and a defined mounting surface. The loading face is typically hardened, ground flat, or fitted with a loading button to ensure in-line force transfer and minimise bending moments. The opposite face is usually intended to be fixed to the structure and is not designed to introduce force in the same controlled way.

Applying force to the wrong face could result in:

โ›“๏ธโ€๐Ÿ’ฅ ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ
Welded shims used for sealing are designed to be weak and flimsy, so as to not disrupt the intended load path.

Small angular or positional errors have a greater impact on accuracy.

Instead of compressing evenly, part of the load cell may flex slightly, affecting the strain pattern the gauges are measuring.

Applying the same force multiple times may not produce the same reading.

The reading at a given force may differ depending on whether the load is increasing or decreasing.

Performance in the final assembly could differ slightly from factory calibration conditions.

The load cell may still โ€œworkโ€ but is unlikely to perform to its specified accuracy.

Some compression load cells are deliberately designed to be symmetrical, enabling the application of force to either face. High-capacity column or double-ended designs used in press or structural testing applications have a mirrored load path, allowing controlled performance regardless of which face receives the force. โžก๏ธโฌ…

The deciding factor should always be the manufacturerโ€™s specification - the intended load surface should be clearly defined in the technical documentation. Our datasheets include loading diagrams so that there is zero uncertainty.

Have you ever traced a performance issue back to installation orientation?
