Last month we welcomed Jack Timmins to JGP. Jack is a Geo-Environmental Engineer. He is currently leading ground investigations across the Southwest and South of the UK and has been a great new addition to the Geo Team. Jack loves hiking and exploring the outdoors in his spare time.

If you are considering a ground investigation, Please do not hesitate to contact Jack via phone: 01752 690533, email: [email protected], Instagram/LinkedIn/Facebook or www.Johngimes.co.uk.

Following our annual inspections earlier in the year, which identified a large crack in the wall above the Millennium Walkway at Sidmouth, JGP has recently carried out further investigations on behalf of East Devon District Council.

These investigations involved using roped access methods to safely assess the ground conditions, as well as assist in a drone survey by Cornish Engineering Surveys.

We are currently undertaking engineering design to remediate the structure and section of cliff. Until these essential cliff repair works have been completed the section of Millennium Walkway below and the adjacent cliff top path within Connaught Gardens will remain closed for safety reasons.

Our Structural Engineers, Chris and Alex recently carried out a full structural inspection of a local fire station, carefully assessing its overall condition to ensure it remains safe, secure, and fit for purpose 🚒

From foundations to roofing, every detail was checked to identify any signs of wear, damage, or potential risks. Inspections like these play a vital role in keeping essential community services operating smoothly and safely.

Faulted contacts are always interesting to observe in the field. Some are more significant than others, such as this one between the Permian Breccia and Devonian Limestone. Where ancient arid desert meets marine deposits. No prizes for guessing where this is!

The pre-cast elements for The Pier House sea wall project at Westward Ho! are now in place and will form part of the new natural looking sea wall.

BBC News and spotlight reported on the works progress and we are proud to see it come altogether and protect the businesses above for years to come.

JGP Merit Award in Geotechnics – 2026

John Grimes Partnership were delighted to recently present the JGP Merit Award in Geotechnics to Lewis Kirby, a BEng Civil Engineering student at the University of Plymouth.

The award recognises the most promising student within the Geotechnics module, acknowledging both academic performance and enthusiasm for the subject.

Alongside his strong interest in geotechnics, Lewis explained that he has particularly enjoyed the Hydraulics module, where he has been studying topics such as surface water management, concrete drainage channels and the principles behind effective conveyance and control of runoff.

During his visit to the JGP office, we spent some time discussing how these areas of study increasingly overlap in professional practice. Across many of the projects we are currently involved in, the interaction between surface water and groundwater is becoming a critical design consideration. This is particularly evident on complex development sites with elevated groundwater levels, or where significant earthworks and cuttings into existing slopes alter the natural groundwater regime.

In these situations, engineers are often required to carefully balance the management of surface water through Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), particularly where infiltration is constrained by ground conditions or high water tables, whilst also addressing the implications for slope stability, landscaping, drainage infrastructure and adjacent civil engineering structures.

It was great to see Lewis already taking an interest in how these disciplines connect in real-world engineering projects, and we look forward to following his progress as he continues his studies.

And of course, Lewis, if you fancy staying in the area after graduating and think you might enjoy working in a multidisciplinary SME environment, please do drop us a message.

Caring for the coastline today and for the future 🧗 🌊

JGP are currently undertaking our annual cliff inspections on behalf of East Devon District Council. The inspections are aimed at managing risk to public safety and are carried out as part of the Council’s beach management plans. These inspections include removing loose unstable soils and rock, keeping vegetation in check and visually assessing the condition of the cliffs.
