It was interesting to see the £39bn allocated for social housing in England in Chancellor Rachel Reeves' spending review yesterday.

We regularly offer civil, structural and environmental solutions to social housing projects. Some recent examples include our work with Handford Homes for their social housing developments in Ipswich.

These sites include Fore Hamlet with SEH French, Bibb Way with Pentaco and Brooks & Wood, and Ravenswood with Gipping Construction.

With a proven track record of providing complex civil, structural and environmental solutions for residential developments, we look forward to what the future brings.

Thanks to Andy Elliot from Modece Architects for taking and sharing these stunning photos of the timber footbridge at the Food Museum in Suffolk with us.

We are proud to have worked on the analysis and design for the footbridge, the design for which took inspiration from the Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge.

Our team recently completed a Stage I/ Tier I Geo-Environmental Assessment to support the development proposal for new residential dwellings and new-build development at the historic site of St Mark's College, Audley End.

Spanning 2.4 acres, the site boasts a fascinating history. Originally constructed as Almshouses alongside the nearby Audley End House (1605-1614), the buildings later served as agricultural buildings in the 19th century. In 1951, the site was repurposed as a home for retired clergymen, with the previously demolished chapel rebuilt. It transitioned once again in 1993, becoming a youth residential centre operated by KPTA, but the site and buildings have been unused since 2020.

The stunning, Grade I Listed, red brick and peg-tiled building has a symmetrical, double rectangular courtyard plan, single-storey rooms in the outer wings and higher principal rooms in the part between the courts. Arched internal porches lead centrally to each court on their east and west sides.

It has been a pleasure to work alongside the talented team of architects at Studio Cullinan And Buck Architects Ltd and we’re proud to have played a role in helping shape the future of this remarkable site.

Many thanks to Adam Steele and Caroline Jooste for leading on this project.

Our team recently completed a Stage I / Tier I Geo-Environmental Desk Study at the remarkable and wonderfully historic Temple Dinsley Estate in Hertfordshire.

First recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, this former Preceptory — a unique blend of monastery and manor — was once home to the Knights Templar and became the most significant Preceptory in South East England, regularly hosting the Knights' national Chapters (their equivalent of AGMs). More recently it was home to Princess Helena Boarding School.

The current owners are pursuing a sensitive and sustainable redevelopment of the estate. They want to ensure they engage the best conservation principles possible; committed to preserving its outstanding heritage while ensuring its future viability.

Given the sheer scale of the site, we produced six individual reports, whilst working alongside the architects Studio Cullinan And Buck Architects Ltd

It has been a pleasure to work at a site with such a rich history and form part of the team who are helping to preserve this history for generations to come.

Thank you to Adam Steele and Daniel Fowles for their work on this project.

You can read more and find out more about the history of the site on our website - https://chick.co.uk/stage-i-tier-i-geo-environmental-desk-study-at-historic-temple-dinsley-estate/

Here are some photos of our work at the redevelopment of the Earl Soham Business Centre in Suffolk, where, from late 2022, our Environmental Services team has provided extensive and robust contaminated land assessments and advice. Our work would facilitate the progress of our client’s planning application for the demolition of the existing structures and construction of a residential development, working alongside Peter Wells Architects.

Our work on the project initially comprised a Stage I/ Tier I Geo-Environmental Desk Study, in which our expert research teams reviewed all historical and regulatory information pertaining to the site. Once the initial research was complete, the team conducted a walkover survey of the site and surrounding area, enabling us to identify any potential contaminative sources and determine the appropriate scope of work for future investigations.

This work was followed by a Stage I/ Tier II Ground Investigation by our highly qualified team. We excavated a series of hand excavated boreholes to retrieve soil samples for geochemical testing, as well as a series of dynamic sampling boreholes with combined ground gas and groundwater monitoring points.

Following the submission of our initial reports, our Environmental Services team also produced a Stage II Options Appraisal and Remediation Strategy. This document details the remediation methods, and validation measures to be employed at the site, to ensure construction workers and future site users and the surrounding environment are protected, and that any risks to controlled waters are mitigated.

We are looking forward to seeing the finished result when the project is completed. If you'd like to find out more about this project, please get in touch with Adam Steele or Dan Fowles or visit the 'News' section of our website.
