Can you imagine dragging this little lot round Manufactured Yorkshire Conference tomorrow?

Let's start from the right. first, a top-of-the-line Sony Walkman, which would play one cassette - so music for 90 minutes. (anyone here that's never seen a cassette??)

The next one is a Polaroid instant camera followed by - believe it or not - a carphone.

In the middle you'll find an early Mac laptop, a digital watch, and a pager. To the left, there is a JVC camcorder, and that piece of junk on the far left is an early Apple PDA, which went by the name of the Apple Newton.

Together these items played music on the go (limited to one tape), took pictures on the go (limited to one roll of instant polaroid film), made phone calls (talk time say 30 minutes), did computer stuff, told you the time and woke you in the morning, alerted you to find a phone to call someone (said phone was usually plugged into a wall and sometimes accepted quarters), took video (and played it back), and recorded notes and names and addresses.

Now all of the above is in the smartphone in your pocket or purse - and not only that, you have a GPS, smart maps, email, books, hand-held video games, a compass, spirit level, personal assistant, and even enough software to fly yourself from one place to another.

It would appear that Moore’s Law is alive and well!
