Today our ATAC team is marking Baby Loss Awareness Week with a simple act of support.

This week is a chance to remember much-loved and missed babies, stand with bereaved families, and help break the silence around pregnancy and baby loss.

Colleagues are wearing blue or pink as a visible sign of remembrance.

At 1:00pm we shared a pizza lunch, and instead of charging for it we are asking anyone who can to make a donation of their choosing. Every contribution, whatever the size, helps charities keep supporting people and families affected by pregnancy and baby loss.

ATAC has successfully completed another aeration lane refurbishment. Working with our client, we have finished a full replacement of the low-level pipework and 936 nine-inch aeration membranes on Aeration Lane 5 at a Sewage Treatment Works in Hertfordshire, the first of two lanes, with Lane 7 to follow.

Taking the lanes one at a time keeps the works in service. Delivered as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer under , our team managed site coordination, confined space operations, welfare, safety and project ex*****on throughout.

Works completed across Lane 5:
-Removal and disposal of all existing low-level aeration pipework
-Lane cleaning to remove settled sludge and grit, carried out by confined space teams
-Multiple scaffold access points for safe access and egress to all parts of the lane
-Aeration integrity checks, reintroduction of flow and air, and pattern testing to verify coverage
-Recommissioning and handback to site operations

Lane 5 is back in service and attention now turns to Lane 7.

The first aeration lane of the ASP re-doming works at STW site in Buckinghamshire is finished and back in service.
The wider scheme covers two mirror-image ASP plants, each with two aeration lanes, and the replacement of 7,150 nine-inch fine bubble diffusers, with inspection of drop legs, manifolds and pipework. The existing diffusers were last replaced in 2015/2016 and had reached the end of their asset life, with failures showing up in recent inspections.

On Lane 1 our team has:

-Installed flow isolation boards to hold the lane dry and prevent effluent re-entry from the adjacent lanes, with over-pumping and filtration to the interstage pumping station during draining

-Cleaned out the lane and removed grit, rag and sludge arisings, using a grit plant to separate solids before disposal to licensed facilities

-Completed the 1,784 diffuser membrane replacement, with drop legs, manifolds and pipework inspected and made good as required

-Worked throughout under confined space controls, with scaffolded access and safe egress in place for the duration of the outage

-The lane was pattern tested. Air flow balancing was completed lane by lane.

Since commissioning on 28 July 2026, the refurbished lane has already removed:
- 79,832 kg of BOD
- 15,718 kg of ammonia (NH₃)

Restoring aeration performance on a live works takes careful sequencing around isolations, outages and everything else happening on site. Thanks to the site team for the coordination that made it possible. Attention now turns to the remaining lanes.

Our Senior Project Engineer, James Topham, spent 32 weeks preparing for Ironman Nice. He got there, only to hear the event had been cancelled because of abnormally hot weather.

Disappointed, of course. Health and safety comes first, though, and James, like many of the other athletes, took the news with good grace and came home.

That work was not going to waste. James recently completed the 2026 Vitruvian triathlon at Rutland Water:

-Swim: 1.9 km (1.2 miles), two laps in the sheltered open water of Whitwell Creek

-Bike: 89 km (55 miles), three fast laps on open roads, largely flat or undulating around the reservoir

-Run: 21 km (13.1 miles), two scenic laps on flat tarmac along the shoreline

Finish time: 5 hours 50 minutes 32 seconds.

It takes a strong body and a stronger mind to turn a cancelled Ironman into a result like that. Congratulations! We are so proud of you, James. Well done from all of us.
