We’re delighted to share that our Community Ranger, Daniel Hamley, was recognised at The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Award Ceremony last night.

This award highlights the exceptional work Dan leads at Panshanger Park, working closely with a diverse group of volunteers to nurture nature and strengthen our local community.

Presented by Nicholas Buxton, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, this year’s awards centred around the theme “Nature Through Nurture”, a perfect reflection of Dan’s passion and dedication.

Congratulations, Dan this is a truly well‑deserved achievement.

115,000 trees. 63 hectares. One massive step for Norfolk’s landscape. 🌳

The Thompson Woodland Creation Scheme is officially underway. Delivered by Maydencroft in partnership with the The Woodland Trust, this is the Trust’s largest site in Norfolk.

Over the next three years, our teams will plant a planned mix of UK-grown broadleaf woodland and wood pasture. The design is UKFS-compliant and shaped for future climate conditions, with a six-year establishment programme in place.

The project's impact:
✅ Increases woodland cover and supports local biodiversity.
✅ Improves habitat connectivity between Thetford Forest and the Pingos.
✅ Introduces new permissive paths for the local community.

Our thanks to Tom Bolderstone at the Woodland Trust, our Forestry Consultant Joe Western, and the Maydencroft teams involved in the planning, groundwork, and planting.

Last week, our Ecology team visited to carry out a hibernation check of the Ice House, kindly assisted by Panshanger Countryside Rangers Adam and Sam.

The survey identified one hibernating bat within the Ice House. Working carefully and methodically, the team used identification keys to confirm the species, taking great care to ensure minimal disturbance throughout. The bat was confidently identified as a Natterer’s bat.

While on site, we also took the opportunity to visit the park’s Iron Age pigs. These pigs play an important role in habitat management, acting as natural rotavators by breaking up compacted soils, encouraging new growth and creating a range of microhabitats that benefit wetland birds and other wildlife.

The blog (see link in comments) on why protecting oak trees matters, is a timely reminder of just how deeply oak trees are woven into our landscapes, history and biodiversity, and how vulnerable they remain to invasive pests like oak processionary moth (OPM).

We see first-hand the impact OPM can have on both tree health and public safety and our approach reflects the principles outlined by the Forestry Commission: early identification, targeted intervention and long-term management.

We offer:

🦋 Specialist OPM surveys to assess extent and risk
🦋 Safe, controlled nest removal by fully trained operatives
🦋 Pheromone trapping to support monitoring and management planning
🦋 OPM awareness and removal training through
🦋 A commitment to non-spray solutions, protecting wider moth, butterfly and wildlife populations

Maydencroft’s Forestry team, in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Chatsworth Estates, hosted an evening, uniting landowners, forest managers, farmers, and rural professionals to explore the future of woodland creation and management.

🌳 The Forestry Commission opened with a clear walk-through of funding options including EWCO, WCPG, and Countryside Stewardship, helping to demystify what can often feel like a complex process.

🌳 The Chatsworth House forestry team, shared how their operation has grown into a dynamic unit covering harvesting, tree safety, planting, grants, and wider estate management.

🌳 Kate Harvey from Maydencroft highlighted the huge opportunities woodland creation can offer, from boosting biodiversity to strengthening landscape resilience, and how the right funding can turn these ambitions into long-term, achievable projects.

A lively Q&A rounded off the evening, making the path to woodland creation feel clearer and more accessible. Thank you to all involved in what was an inspiring and valuable event that underscored our shared commitment to expanding and improving the UK’s woodlands for the future.

If you are interested in creating or managing woodland, get in touch with our team to explore the opportunities and funding available.

Maydencroft is pleased to share the approval of a Biodiversity Net Gain habitat bank for our client Nature Capital, in collaboration with Harry Ferguson Holdings.

Our team delivered a full BNG Baseline Habitat Survey, drone survey, and the Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP) for a 28ha site near Great Gaddesden within the Chilterns National Landscape.

Following constructive feedback from Responsible Body, Harry Ferguson Holdings, the Conservation Covenant has now been signed, and biodiversity units will soon be available for allocation.

The project includes the creation of mixed scrub, broadleaved woodland, neutral grassland with scattered trees, traditional orchard, and species-rich native hedgerow, along with enhancements to existing scrub and grassland to improve their condition.

We are excited to continue this partnership with Nature Capital, with two further HMMPs in development.

If you’re looking to deliver meaningful Biodiversity Net Gain outcomes or explore habitat banking opportunities, please reach out to our specialist team.
