🔧 Torque Tip Tuesday: Is your torque wrench calibration overdue?

12 months is a common calibration guideline - but it's ONLY a guideline. ⏱️

Your actual calibration interval depends on how hard your tools are working:

🔩 How often you're using them
💪 How intense that use is (high-torque, high-stress applications wear tools faster)
🌡️ Environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, storage
⚠️ Any drops or over-torquing incidents

Relying on the calendar alone can leave you tightening with a tool that may have already drifted out of tolerance, which can be a risk to safety, quality and compliance. ❌

Yesterday the Crane Electronics team swapped torque wrenches for teacups and got stuck into our Macmillan Coffee Morning.

Our canteen turned into a full-on bakery, with everyone bringing in their best cookies, shortbreads, cakes and muffins.

🔩 What is the meaning of torque to yield?

Sometimes a set torque value isn't enough. For certain joints, engineers deliberately take a bolt beyond its elastic limit - permanently stretching it to achieve a precise, high, consistent clamping force. 🗜️

It's a technique used in critical applications like cylinder head bolts, where the joint has to stay securely clamped despite constant temperature and load changes. But it comes with a catch: once a torque-to-yield bolt is removed, it usually can't be reused. ⛓️‍💥

🔧 Torque Tip Tuesday: Does lubricant really change your torque?

The short answer is yes - and the difference can be dramatic! 😱

Only 10–15% of the torque you apply actually goes into clamping force - the rest is lost to friction. Add lubricant, and that friction can drop by up to 50%! 💦

The same torque setting on a dry bolt vs. a lubricated one produces very different clamping forces. Get it wrong and you risk over-tightening (joint failure) or under-tightening (vibration, loosening).

The lubricant type matters too. Oil, grease, anti-seize and dry film all behave differently.

The bottom line is, always check whether a torque spec is meant for dry or lubricated conditions before you pick up the wrench. 🔧

Too loose? You risk a leak under pressure. 💦
