🏫 INWED: Inspiring the Next Generation at 23LR Workspace

What an incredible way to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day!

Design ID welcomed nearly 50 female students from local schools to our 23LR workspace for an engaging day of problem-solving and career inspiration.

Thank you to Emma Fearon, Programme Manager at Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, for kicking us off with an insight into all that the council does to promote skills and education in our community.

Our graduates and apprentices then worked alongside the students on 'Destination Royal Hillsborough' - a real-world engineering challenge that required them to balance sustainable development goals, address residents' concerns, and promote the economic prosperity of the town.

Watching these young minds tackle engineering problems with creativity and enthusiasm was absolutely inspiring.

The energy in the room was infectious, and the feedback was brilliant! The best part? Students were already asking how soon they could return for work experience - now that's the kind of enthusiasm that gets us excited about the future of our industry!

It's moments like these that remind us why events celebrating women in engineering matter so much. When young people can see themselves reflected in our current graduates and apprentices, and when they get hands-on experience with real engineering challenges, it opens up possibilities they might never have considered.

Thank you to Fort Hill Integrated College, St. Dominic's Grammar School Belfast, and St Colman's High School & Sixth Form College for joining us. We genuinely hope to see some of these talented students as the civil engineers of the future - The passion and capability we witnessed today gives us so much optimism for the next generation of female engineers!

In an industry that often presents its challenges, Friday night was a moment of pure joy as our McConnell's Distillery project won a global award!

This incredible transformation of a Victorian prison, Belfast's notorious Crumlin Road Gaol into a modern distillery not only preserves its rich stories but also showcases our commitment to innovative engineering.

The engineering led solutions feature stunning steel V-columns and precast concrete gull-wings, demonstrating what creative engineering can add to a project. Our Conservation Accredited team expertly balanced minimal intervention with the preservation of the original slate and cast iron walkways and stairs, highlighting our unique ability to blend creativity and conservation.

This honour reflects not just our hard work over the past 12 years but acts as a testament to the remarkable journey we've embarked on since 2005. It validates our vision and positions Design ID as a true competitor in the engineering world.

We are inspired to keep pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible adventure! Here's to many more achievements ahead!

And the winner is...

Design ID for McConnell's Distillery.

Awarded for an innovative blend of sensitive conservation and striking structural interventions to revitalise an historic building.

Proud to announce our success at this year's IStructE NII Awards at the Titanic Hotel Belfast! Congratulations to all involved in the Large Project Award Winner, McConnell’s Distillery and Tullybrannigan that won the Small Project Category. Adding to our celebrations, Will Stenton received the Adrian Long Cup in the G&S competition.
