Are Stillages Subject to LOLER? Hereβs What You Need to Know.
LOLER - the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, exist to make sure all lifting equipment in the UK is safe, properly maintained, and used correctly.
So, where do stillages fit in?
It depends on how theyβre used π
πΉ Stillages as part of the load:
When a stillage is simply a platform used to move goods (e.g. lifted by a forklift), itβs treated as part of the load, not as lifting equipment. In this case, LOLER applies to the forklift, not the stillage.
πΉ Stillages as lifting accessories:
If a stillage is designed with dedicated lifting points, slings, or hooks for use with cranes or hoists, itβs classed as lifting equipment and therefore subject to LOLER.
These stillages require thorough examination, inspection, and maintenance to remain compliant and safe.
At JS Burgess Engineering, we design and manufacture stillages that meet the highest safety and compliance standards.
