This week’s Flashlight Friday Focus is a little different. Instead of looking at a product, we’re talking LED droop and we’d love to hear your thoughts and experience. Below is a very simple overview, but we’re interested in what you know about it and which products you’ve seen that help reduce the effect. Let us know in the comments below.

LEDs produce light by passing an electrical current through a semiconductor. Unlike tungsten lamps, they’re efficient and long lasting, but their performance depends on how they’re driven and managed. As current increases to produce more light, LED efficiency starts to drop. This is known as LED droop.

Without compensation, an LED driven harder produces less light for the increase in power. Higher drive currents also increase junction temperature, which can further reduce efficiency, affect colour consistency and impact reliability if not properly managed. Two fixtures using the same LEDs can perform quite differently depending on how well the manufacturer manages these effects.

Manufacturers use different approaches. ETC incorporates LED droop compensation into its ColorSource V range, adjusting the drive characteristics to help maintain consistent output as operating conditions change. Other manufacturers, including ARRI, Martin Professional, GLP - German Light Products, Kino Flo Lighting Systems and Aputure, focus on thermal management, LED calibration and engineered drive electronics to help maintain stable output and colour throughout the fixture's life.

That’s one of the reasons why published lumen figures don't tell the whole story. Two fixtures may look similar when first switched on, but over time their performance can differ depending on how well they manage LED efficiency and temperature. Not all LED products are the same.

If you’d like to find out more about any of the premium LED products Flashlight offers, please contact the Flashlight team. And please do share your views and experience.

This week's Flashlight Friday Focus is on the ETC ColorSource Fresnel V MAX, a full-colour LED Fresnel that combines significantly increased output with ETC's proven colour technology for theatres, houses of worship and event and experiential spaces.

For nearly 50 years, ETC has been designing lighting and control solutions for the entertainment industry, with a reputation for products that prioritise quality, reliability and ease of use.

The ColorSource Fresnel V MAX builds on the original Fresnel V with nearly twice the output while retaining the familiar soft beam and field expected from a Fresnel. It features RGBIL (Red, Green, Blue, Indigo and Lime) LED, a calibrated colour system for precise results across fixtures now and in the future and thermal droop compensation for consistent colour throughout a performance. A motorised 13°–44° zoom can be adjusted locally or via DMX, while onboard pre-sets, effects, smooth 15-bit virtual dimming and selectable PWM frequencies provide the flexibility required for both live and camera applications. The fixture also supports RDM and Multiverse® wireless DMX/RDM control

At Flashlight, we've seen strong interest from our theatre, education, broadcast and integration clients for the ColorSource range thanks to its straightforward ease of use and consistent colour. The Fresnel V MAX builds on that with higher output and greater flexibility, making it a stand out addition to the range.

If you'd like to find out more about the ETC ColorSource Fresnel V MAX or discuss the ETC range, please contact the Flashlight team.

This week's Flashlight Friday Focus is on the LDDE - Lighting Ideas NanoPix C*C 8, a compact LED c*clorama fixture designed to deliver even, consistent illumination for theatre, television studios, live events and architectural applications.

Based in Austria, LDDE has spent more than 30 years designing and manufacturing professional lighting equipment for the entertainment industry, building a reputation for producing practical, well-engineered fixtures that address the real-world demands of theatres, broadcast studios and live events, with a focus on reliability, performance and ease of use.

The NanoPix C*C 8 uses 750 high-density LEDs, with its eight-colour LED system combining Royal Blue, Blue, Cyan, Green, Lime, Amber, Red and Deep Red to provide a wide colour range and continuously variable colour temperature from 2700K to 9000K. It features multiple DMX channel modes, 16-bit dimming, supports RDM and offers selectable 1500Hz and 3000Hz PWM frequencies for HDTV and camera applications. Its asymmetric optical design allows the fixture to be positioned close to a c*clorama or wall while still achieving smooth, even illumination, making it particularly well suited where space is limited.

At Flashlight, we're seeing continued interest from our customer base across theatres, TV and film studios and touring in fixtures that combine accurate colour, high-quality white light and practical installation features, the NanoPix C*C 8 is an excellent compact example of that.

Here is what LDDE had to say about Flashlight “Flashlight has been a great partner for LDDE for many years. They know our products, understand the market and, most importantly, know how to bring the right solution to the right project. It’s always a pleasure working with the team.”

If you'd like to find out more about the LDDE NanoPix C*C 8 or discuss the wider LDDE range, please contact the Flashlight team.

In this week's Flashlight Friday Focus we're introducing a new focus on a solution that we have provided. A recently completed studio upgrade that brought together a range of lighting, control and infrastructure from our manufacturing partners where the right solution is created by bringing together the right products for the application.

The project included equipment from DeSisti Lighting , Litepanels, Martin Professional, ETC, High End Systems, Doughty Engineering Ltd , City Theatrical and Tourflex, creating a flexible lighting setup tailored to the customer’s day-to-day needs. Products including Fresnels, ColorSource, MAC One, Lonestar Prime, Multiverse and Megapix, along with clamps and cables, were all installed as part of the upgrade.

At Flashlight, we know that choosing the right kit is only part of the process. Good planning, product demonstrations, clear specs and outstanding service all play an important role too. That’s why we work closely with both our customers and our partners to make sure the right service is delivered at the right time, from the first enquiry through to installation and beyond.

If you're planning a studio upgrade or looking to refresh your existing lighting, control, infrastructure or consumables, we’d be happy to talk through your requirements, arrange demonstrations and deliver exceptional service to ensure you get the right equipment for your requirements.
