🛑 Are you still analysing chemical threats directly?

🔎 The Vector Proximal Standoff is a new accessory that allows Rigaku's Icon-X Raman analyser to assess compounds up to 3 metres away.

☣️ The Icon-X itself is a handheld Raman analyser capable of identifying a wide range of threats, including improvised explosives, chemical warfare agents, narcotics, and other unknown substances. By pairing the analyser with the Vector, users can conduct remote assessments without the need to physically sample or disturb suspicious materials.

🧪 The Icon-X slides securely into the Vector’s cradle, enabling immediate standoff analysis. This can be mounted on a tripod or integrated into a UGV for stable, remote Raman measurements in hostile or unsafe environments. Together, the Icon-X and Vector can analyse powders, liquids, pastes and solid materials at short distances.

📜 A recently published study from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust has examined the radiation safety requirements associated with the UK's first deployment of a mobile specimen PET-CT imager for surgical oncology.

💡 Intraoperative PET-CT allows surgeons to assess tumour margins immediately after tissue resection directly in theatre, providing valuable information during surgery and supporting more precise tumour removal. While this offers significant clinical benefits, it also introduces new considerations around radiation exposure, contamination control and radioactive waste management within surgery.

✅ Over a 10-month period, researchers evaluated 56 surgical procedures and found that radiation doses remained well controlled across all staff groups. Contamination events were rare, minor and effectively managed, demonstrating that intraoperative PET-CT can be introduced safely when supported by appropriate radiation protection measures.

☢️ Southern Scientific and BriTec were proud to support this pioneering trial by supplying a range of radiation protection instruments such as dosimeters and monitors as well as customised shielding solutions including a catheter bag trolley and equipment trolley to manage occupational exposure, contamination levels and environmental dose rates.

🔶 The study highlights the importance of combining robust procedures, staff training, appropriate shielding, and reliable monitoring equipment to ensure safety and confidence when implementing new technologies.

🐎 Are you protected against ionising radiation when imaging animals?

☢️ Government guidelines such as Chapter 27 of JPS 392 have placed renewed emphasis on safeguarding veterinarians working with diagnostic X-ray equipment. While exposure can be reduced by wearing PPE such as lead aprons, only by measuring radiation can a vet truly understand their own risk.

New clinical evidence highlights the potential of intraoperative molecular imaging to improve breast-conserving surgery📜

A new multicentre BrIMA study, published in JAMA Surgery, has demonstrated that the XEOS AURA 10 mobile PET-CT specimen imager significantly improves surgeons' ability to identify positive margins during breast-conserving surgery. The study found:

👉 Intraoperative success rates increased from 83.3% to 95.2% in invasive ductal carcinoma cases

👉 Across all breast cancer subtypes, success rates improved from 76.4% to 91.9%

👉 No device-related adverse events were reported

By providing high-resolution PET-CT images of the entire excised specimen in around 10 minutes, the AURA 10 helps surgeons make informed decisions while the patient is still in the operating room, potentially reducing the need for repeat surgeries and improving patient outcomes.
