Natural Plasters is the online identity of Clayworks, an artisan English company that manufactures beautiful and healthy wall plasters/finishes from unfired clay.

Rooflights bring natural light into deep or complex spaces, creating unexpected washes of sunlight that highlight the texture, depth and materiality of interior surfaces.

At Solus Ceramics’ Clerkenwell showroom, designed by Simon Astridge and Szczepaniak-Teh, a bespoke Clayworks Rustic finish incorporates crushed recycled ceramic samples, creating a richly tactile surface. On the lower level, a resource centre houses over 4,000 tiles, while overhead rooflights illuminate the surrounding vaulted workspaces, showing the subtle variations in texture and tone of the custom clay plaster.

At Studio for a Composer by Mary Duggan Architects, sculptural rooflights softly illuminate curving walls finished in our Tonal Demi-Rustic clay plaster. The natural texture and acoustic properties of clay complement the atmospheric design, conceived as a space for both musical performance and creative work.

A colour palette of terracotta, deep olive and warm timber, along with the soft, earthy tones of our Smooth and Rustic clay plaster bring a sense of southern Italy’s rural and coastal landscapes to Massara, New York City.

Our in-house sampling service allows project teams to explore ideas, finishes and colour, while also pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with natural materials.

At Ham Hill Country Park in Somerset, Lime Kiln Café draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, its Jurassic geology, wildflower meadows and rich cultural heritage. Dried flowers and foliage sustainably gathered from across Ham Hill Country Park alongside the park rangers were carefully imprinted into the clay plaster, connecting the café’s interiors to its setting.

Earth Matters at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh marks 300 years since the birth of James Hutton, the Edinburgh-born geologist, farmer and thinker who pioneered the concept of deep time.

Inspired by Hutton and later trailblazers including Rachel Carson and Lady Eve Balfour, the exhibition brings together over 30 artists exploring the beauty, complexity and fragility of the earth beneath our feet.

Among the standout works for us were Becky Little and Tom Morton’s ‘River of Earth’ - salvaged clay-rich subsoil that appears to flow across the room, shrinking from larger masses to finer sieved particles, before being polished into a sphere, revealing the clay that binds it; Louise Bennetts’ delicate fabrics hand-painted with soils; Kevin Andrew Morris’ series of spades, made from wild clay dug at the site of a former Aberdeen brickworks; Crunch Willoughby’s ceramic interpretation of a peat stack; and Nancy Fuller’s St Austell Kame, made from now inaccessible English raw clays that retain their ancient water.

The exhibition resonated deeply with our reverence for earth as a material, and our belief in the importance of healthy soils and thriving ecosystems.

In Munich’s historic Old Town, Stone Island’s three-storey flagship store celebrates a culture of textile engineering and craftsmanship, extending beyond retail to include an auditorium space for talks, events and community gatherings.

Located within the basement level, the auditorium is enveloped in our Rammed Earth Finish, evoking the geological strata of the earth. Alongside burnt cork, hand-sandblasted metal and Tyvek ceilings, the finish reflects Stone Island’s fascination with material transformation and experimentation.

Set within the East Sussex countryside and nestled beside orchards, College Farm is a contemporary reimagining of an agricultural Sussex barn by multidisciplinary design studio BOX 9. Conceived as a long-term home for the practice as well as a location for photography and film, the barn retains the generous volume and character of its agricultural origins.

Clayworks Smooth Clay Plaster is used throughout, colour-drenching the interior in a warm, honey tone that feels intrinsically connected to its rural setting.

Butterfly House by Oliver Leech Architects is defined by its restrained material palette and inverted ‘butterfly’ roof forms, expressed through exposed larch beams.

Polished concrete floors and soft clay plaster walls tie the spaces together, allowing the ceiling forms to be the focus. In contrast to the dark, charred timber used externally, our clay plaster brings a muted, calm mood to the interior - a refined backdrop to the warm rich tones of the larch and oak joinery.

Ffern’s London flagship brings the brand’s Somerset heritage and natural approach to fragrance into a multisensory retail environment. Designed by holistic interior studio House of Grey, the space is a calming counterpoint to the energy of central London, using naturally derived and sustainably sourced materials throughout.

Clayworks Smooth clay plaster in WHI-07, our un-pigmented finish, was applied to the curved walls and ceiling of the fragrance archive, allowing the natural colour of our clay to form part of the palette. Its breathable, hygroscopic properties help regulate humidity and support the indoor air quality, while its soft, tactile surface contributes to the acoustic comfort and calm atmosphere of the space.

London Design Festival always offers more than can reasonably be fitted into a few days, so this year we approached it as an opportunity to follow some of the ideas that interest us most - material, resource, craft and the relationship between them.

From a newly completed Clayworks project in Marylebone to exhibitions exploring British timber, geological resources and material reuse, a common thread emerged throughout the week - a growing interest in where materials come from, what they can do, and how architects and designers could respond more directly to the resources available to us.
