From Fragmented to Flowing. As featured in Architecture Magazine, this before and after case study - showcases how a North Yorkshire farmhouse renovation started with a staircase replacement in mind - but turned into so much more.

Bisca was introduced to work with the project's architect and interior designer early in the project - changing the trajectory of the scheme. Rather than the staircase being constrained by the layout - it was used to inform circulation, structure and the sensitive relationship between light, movement and aesthetics.

Crafted for a 400-year-old Suffolk barn conversion, this staircase design celebrates materials deeply connected to the character of the property itself.

Chunky green oak treads, coppiced hazel uprights and dark brown leather detailing combine to create a tactile and honest staircase, rich in heritage.

Designed to balance sculptural craftsmanship with warmth and authenticity - this project is the perfect reminder of how Bisca’s approach to materiality, helps shape not just the staircase itself - but the emotional character of the home around it.

Sweeping through the centre of this characterful farmhouse, reclaimed oak treads and graceful helical forms elevate the staircase into far more than a route between floors.

Every detail was designed to shape how the home feels - softening the architecture, drawing natural light through the entrance hall, while creating a feeling of warmth, calm and understated luxury.

Inspired by the surrounding ancient woodland, the staircase balances sculptural beauty with comfort, craftsmanship and emotional connection… a reflection of Bisca’s unique approach to staircase design. Where every curve, material and detail is carefully considered.

Carefully wrapped and poised for departure, this staircase enjoys its final evening in Yorkshire - nestled beneath a flowering clematis, before entering the last chapter of its Bisca journey.

Set to rise dramatically through the vaulted entrance hallway of our clients stunning new build home - its beautifully engineered components are soon to be transformed in to sculptural bronze forms; the structure welded seamlessly into its final position, before flowing handrails, layers of rich oak treads and refined detailing complete the installation with concealed lighting.

Even in raw form, this staircase is utterly arresting.

Towering through our workshop are two imposing sculptural ribbons, their sweeping spirals already carrying an extraordinary sense of drama, movement and presence. Every inch has been beautifully shaped, welded, refined and finished by hand - layers of bronze metallic paint and hand-applied patination bringing depth and warmth to their surface.

In anticipation of shipment, this week our client travelled from America to stand beneath it. In that moment, the vision became real.

Not simply a staircase - but the sculptural heart of a future ski chalet.

The most successful staircase transformations begin long before manufacture - at concept stage, where architecture, interior design and staircase planning come together as one.

Working collaboratively with Architecture and Crecraft Interiors, this project placed the staircase at the heart of the home’s redesign; shaping flow, movement, aesthetics and the overall interior experience.

Created for a striking new build property, this sweeping design brings softness, flow and elegance into the heart of the home. Inspired by ornate bronze detailing, the staircase balances traditional influence with contemporary restraint.
