I still spend a lot of time on site with the team, and days like this are a good reminder that engineering is rarely as tidy as the finished result makes it look.

Today’s job involved replacing a faulty controller on a residential sprinkler pump set, tucked away in a loft space with restricted access.

Even on a relatively small installation, the same standards still apply — safe isolation, careful removal of the existing controller, correct wiring of the replacement, functional checks and final testing to make sure the pump set is operating as it should.

Not the most comfortable place to spend the day, but all part of the job.

A proper hands-on repair for one of our apprentices today.

We were replacing the non-drive-end bearings and bearing housing on a CD10K pump after the original bearing overheated and failed.

The failure was severe enough for the inner race to seize onto the shaft, with the existing bearing housing also damaged beyond reuse.

Under guidance, our apprentice carried out the repair from strip-down through to fitting the new housing and bearings and rebuilding the pump.

We don’t want our apprentices just watching from the side.

Giving them real responsibility on jobs like this is how they learn what component failure actually looks like, how to approach the repair correctly and how to become confident engineers in their own right.

Fire pump systems are a core part of RDF, covering everything from planned servicing and testing through to electrical and mechanical fault finding, repairs and commissioning.

For us, this is more than another logo to add to the website.

A large part of our work is carried out in live plant rooms, fire protection systems and commercial sites, often involving heavy mechanical equipment, electrical systems and critical building services.

Achieving SafeContractor accreditation provides our customers with further assurance that the way we manage health & safety, competency and site operations has been independently assessed.

As RDF continues to grow, we’re putting the systems and accreditations in place to support that growth while maintaining the standard of engineering our customers expect.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Pump Engineer with transferable mechanical and electrical skills who can hit the ground running.
You will be responsible for:
• Service, maintenance, and repair of fire pumps, booster sets, and general pumping equipment
• Fault-finding and troubleshooting (electrical & mechanical)
• Installation, commissioning, and remedial works
• Completing service reports and maintaining compliance with industry standards (e.g. LPCB, ISO)
• Supporting clients with professional and reliable on-site solutions

What We’re Looking For
• Strong background in pumps, rotating equipment, or mechanical/electrical engineering
• Ability to work independently and problem-solve on site
• Knowledge of fire pumps, booster sets, or similar systems (preferred but not essential)
• Flexible, reliable, and client-focused approach
• Full UK driving licence
