Brexit impact. Prepare for Brexit the government rammed down our throats and at last the ‘deal’ was done. Four years of delays and uncertainty and then Covid-19 meant that few businesses could fully prepare. However, the real issues have been two-fold. Customs clearance delays due to existing customs agencies being overwhelmed, coupled with a lack of HMRC customs staff. Parcel companies such as TNT, DPD, DHL having a large number of small packages with incorrect / incomplete customs forms and some routing ‘hubs’ in mainland Europe being closed down due to Covid-19. Resulting in parcels ‘stuck in transit’ with no hope of being moved onwards. Things are gradually improving, and we are doing our best. Please be understanding and patient if your order has been delayed.
Covid-19 is sadly still running riot in the UK, Europe and the vast majority of countries. I am grateful to be in the industry we are, and my heart goes out to companies and people who have been hit far harder. I hope we can all retain a level of tolerance for those with a somewhat cavalier attitude to the pandemic and to also take the time to support those less fortunate.
Very few countries have handled Covid-19 well and it is easy to criticise those in charge. It is easy for anyone, myself included, to say they should have done better. However, to err is human & I hope that people will continue to consider that we have all played a part in ‘creating’ the world we now live in and trade in.
Hats off to Australia and New Zealand where their governments handling of Covid-19 has resulted in lives and economies being in a far better state that the UK and countless other countries. Clearly there are benefits of being ‘island nations’ and having strict Bio-security policies & controls at the point of entry for both goods and people.
The vast majority of countries have retained border controls and if you were / are willing to pay the price then trade and travel has continued and will continue with the farthest reaches of the globe. Being a member of the EC bought with it the Schengen Agreement, resulting in internal border checks for travel and goods being largely abolished. For the consumer it meant almost unrestricted movement of people, goods and sadly Covid-19. To err is human so once again I hope that people will continue to consider that we have all played a part in ‘creating’ the world we now live in and trade in. If we all make a small number of changes then there is no reason why the future cannot be far better than the past.
