Njord Subsea and Chartwell Marine have announced the successful completion of a collaborative vessel design challenge aimed at supporting the emerging demands of next‑generation floating offshore wind projects in the UK and internationally.

As the global energy sector accelerates its transition toward floating wind technology, new classes of offshore vessels are required to meet the complex installation, maintenance, and operational needs of deep‑water renewable infrastructure and mooring systems. Combining Chartwell Marine’s renowned expertise in next generation vessel design with Njord Subsea’s extensive experience in offshore construction and project ex*****on, the two companies have developed an innovative concept vessel tailored specifically to these evolving requirements.

The design challenge focused on defining a vessel capable of delivering safe, efficient, and cost‑effective support for floating turbine deployment and lifecycle operations. Key areas explored included enhanced operational flexibility, expanded deck capacity, storage solutions, overboarding systems and improved operational efficiency to align with net‑zero maritime objectives.

The partnership reflects a growing recognition that cross‑disciplinary cooperation is essential to unlocking the full potential of floating wind technologies. As the sector moves from pilot projects to large‑scale commercial deployment, both companies see significant opportunities for innovation in vessel design, marine operations, and project delivery.

, and Chartwell Marine Partner to Build New Educational Research Vessel R/V Brewer—a 50’ × 23’ aluminum research catamaran named in honor of Jack Brewer, founder of Brewers Marinas. Designed with Chartwell Marine, the vessel blends proven performance with a flexible educational layout optimized for data collection, onboard learning, and passenger safety. Construction will take place at Derecktor’s New York yard, underscoring our commitment to innovative, American-built vessels that strengthen local marine science and education. Great to make the announcement on the first day of the International show in New Orleans.

We’re excited to share that we’ve been selected to design the new Fair Isle ferry for Island Council, with construction set to begin at .

Supported by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, this £5.6M contract will deliver a vessel to replace the 1986-built Good Shepherd, providing a vital transport link between Fair Isle and the Shetland mainland.

Key features include:
Multi-purpose design for 12 passengers, vehicles, and cargo
Roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) capability
Enhanced hull and changeable pitch propeller for challenging waters
Accommodation for four crew members and advanced cargo-handling equipment
IMO Tier-3 emissions compliant, with diesel-alternative ready engines
The ferry is scheduled to enter operation in late 2026, marking another milestone in our expansion into the ferry market. We’re looking forward to working closely with the team at Parkol to bring this project to life.

Chartwell Marine is a Trusted Pioneer in Next Generation Vessel Design.

This is our 32m Passenger Ferry passaging at 30 knots in calm water. In this test we are analysing both hull form resistance and generated hull wash/wake. This test considers the relationship between centre of gravity and vessel trim. Both weight distribution and the use of foils are tested and analysed.

Maritime Solent is a hub of maritime expertise. Working with Wolfson Unit MTIA University of Southampton test tank we are able to research and develop new hull forms to suit emergent technologies to create maritime solutions for our international customers.
