π¨ SHOCKING TYRE DISCOVERY AT NIGHTINGALES GARAGE! π¨
A 7-year-old Audi with a 17-year-old tyre! π±π
This week we had this lovely Audi in for a routine service and replacement tyres.
But what we discovered left us shocked!
β οΈ One of the tyres was manufactured in 2009 β making it 17 YEARS OLD!
Thatβs a tyre 10 years older than the car itself! π³
π DID YOU KNOW?
Every tyre has a manufacturing date stamped on its sidewall. The last four digits of the DOT code tell you the week and year it was manufactured.
In this case, 4609 means the tyre was manufactured in week 46 of 2009!
π WHY DOES TYRE AGE MATTER?
As tyres get older, the rubber can deteriorate, harden and crack, even if thereβs plenty of tread remaining.
This can lead to:
β Reduced grip, especially in wet conditions
β Cracking and deterioration of the sidewalls
β Increased risk of tyre failure
β Potentially dangerous blowouts
Many tyre manufacturers recommend having tyres professionally inspected once theyβre 5 years old. Michelin recommends replacing tyres at 10 years from manufacture as a precaution, regardless of tread depth.
β οΈ THE DANGERS OF PART-WORN TYRES!
Given that this tyre was manufactured long before the car, itβs clear it wasnβt fitted from new.
Itβs possible that a previous owner or car dealer fitted a part-worn tyre at some point.
This highlights why you should always be cautious when buying part-worn tyres. They might look perfectly fine, but you donβt necessarily know their age, history or what damage they may have suffered.
π AT NIGHTINGALES GARAGE, YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST!
We donβt just look at how much tread your tyres have. We also check their condition, age and overall safety.
Because a tyre with plenty of tread isnβt necessarily a safe tyre!
