1st Down is a Detroit hip-hop group formed by Phat Kat and Jon Doe in the mid-1990s. Signed to Payday Records, the group recorded one album and released a single before the label went defunct, leaving the full project unreleased.

More than thirty years later, Detroit Vinyl presents the complete album exactly as it was intended to be heard, preserving a critical piece of Detroit hip-hop history and showcasing the earliest recorded work of the artist who would later become J Dilla!

Originally released on the legendary Chain Reaction label, Landlocked was a CD album comprising of the first three Hallucinator 12”s, alongside extra tracks that never made it to wax thereafter. The collective work of Trevor Mathison, Edward George and Anna Piva counts as some of the densest material on a label already famed for bringing new forms of dub influenced electronics to the table at the time, expanding the paradigm of “Dub Techno” into something beyond the sum of its parts. With driving subterranean Techno, cracked soundscapes, skittish percussion and actual melody, Hallucinator managed to coax a wide range of modes out of a fairly narrow sonic remit, and remains some of the most interesting music to come out of that period. Now reissued on 2x12” for the first time via Numbers, remastered by Rashad Becker and featuring artwork by Ben Drury. Shipping mid-September via rubadub.co.uk
