A familiar landmark in Pollokshields, is set to begin a new chapter in its long and notable history. Craigholme School, founded in 1894 by Jessie Murdoch as Pollokshields Ladies’ School, which apparently had forty pupils on the roll and housed at 63 Dalziel Drive. The institution grew steadily over the decades, spreading across several grand villas on St Andrew’s Drive, and Hamilton Avenue. It continued to evolve through wartime evacuations, expansions in the mid-20th century, and even the addition of a modern sports complex in the early 2000s.

After serving generations of Glasgow families, the school closed its doors in 2020.

Today, the site is being given a renewed purpose. A local entrepreneur has purchased the former school and is transforming the buildings into a collection of private dwellings, ensuring that this well-known part of the South Side’s architectural heritage remains in active use.

Reid Wire Ltd. is proud to support this redevelopment. We have been commissioned to manufacture and install a completely new steel staircase system for both wings of one of the buildings, providing safe and compliant access to all levels. Work is well underway, and nearing completion on our part, our team as always, have done us proud.

We were proud to play a further part in the ongoing care of one of Glasgow’s most treasured landmarks, Kibble Palace, located within the Botanic Gardens on behalf of Glasgow City Council.

Named after the remarkable John Kibble, the Palace stands as a testament to Victorian ingenuity and ambition. Kibble was considered an engineer, astronomer and photographer, an entrepreneurial figure whose eccentric achievements included transporting enormous photographic equipment by horse and cart and even bicycling across Loch Long on floats.

Originally erected at Coulport on the shores of Loch Long as the Kibble Crystal Art Palace, the structure was later dismantled, transported by barge to Glasgow in 1871 and reconstructed on a grander scale. It reopened in 1873, featuring the impressive 150-foot circular dome and extended transepts that still define its presence today.

Over the decades, the Palace has become home to a nationally significant collection of tree ferns, orchids and carnivorous plants. The tranquil goldfish pond beneath the smaller dome was established in the 1880s and still remains a much-loved feature, now home to splendid Koi carp and centred around an Australian Soft Tree Fern.

Following our previous re-work to the spiral staircase within the Palm House, Reid Wire was delighted to be invited back to manufacture and install a bespoke housing guard for the pond’s pump and filtration system. While discreet in appearance, this installation plays an important role in protecting the equipment that keeps the water clean and healthy for the fish and the surrounding environment.

Contributing to the preservation and functionality of such a historic and iconic structure is always a privilege. We value the opportunity to apply modern fabrication expertise in a setting that carries over 150 years of heritage, ensuring practical improvements are delivered with care and respect for the original architecture.

When a tack weld just won't do..........

At Reid Wire, we understand that the difference between a quick fix and a long-lasting solution comes down to the quality of the weld behind it. A tack weld may hold something in place temporarily, but it will never deliver the strength, accuracy or reliability that a finished product demands.

Our team takes every project beyond the minimum. Each weld is produced using the correct process, controlled heat, and skilled workmanship to ensure full pe*******on, structural integrity and a clean, consistent finish. This is the standard that makes our fabrications and repairs durable, safe and truly fit for purpose.

From bespoke assemblies to heavy-use components, our focus remains the same: precision, quality and a result our clients can trust.

If you need wirework built to last, not just held together, then trust Reid Wire Ltd.

Another Happy Customer in Kings Park, Glasgow !

Reid Wire recently had the pleasure of manufacturing and installing a brand-new steel handrail at the front entrance of Mr & Mrs Smith’s home in Kings Park.

The project was completed to our usual high standard, and the results speak for themselves. Not only does the handrail add strength and safety to the entrance, but it also enhances the overall look of the property.

We were delighted to hear such positive feedback from our customer:
“We are very happy with the workmanship & installation. The team were 1st class, and we would recommend Reid Wire to anyone!”

At Reid Wire, we take pride in combining quality craftsmanship with reliable service. Whether it’s handrails, gates, staircases, or custom fabrications, our team is always here to deliver.

🌳 Restoring a Piece of Glasgow’s Artistic Heritage 🌳

Just a short walk, around 150 metres from Navid’s famous store in ‘Still Game’, stands the Townhead Tree, a striking sculptural tribute to Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Designed by artist Liz Peden as part of the Gorbals Art Project, the piece was originally installed in 2008 to celebrate Glasgow’s artistic legacy and bring creativity into public spaces.

Over the years, however, the Townhead Tree suffered from both the elements and repeated vandalism. Once a proud feature of the area, it fell into disrepair, leaving its future uncertain. When Glasgow City Council began considering options for its fate, the opportunity arose to breathe new life into this important piece of public art.

That challenge was awarded to us, and we were honoured to take it on.

Our master craftsmen faced a difficult task: the sculpture had been badly twisted, weakened, and damaged. Restoring it required not just technical skill but also a sensitivity to the artist’s original vision. Through careful strengthening, reshaping, and finishing, the Townhead Tree was gradually restored to its full form, balancing artistry with durability.

Now re-erected on its original mount, the Townhead Tree once again stands tall in the heart of Townhead—an emblem of resilience, creativity, and community pride.

For us, this project represents more than just a restoration; it’s about preserving Glasgow’s cultural identity, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can continue to enjoy a work that honours both Mackintosh’s legacy and the city’s enduring commitment to public art.

We are proud to have played our part in giving the Townhead Tree a second life, and we hope it will continue to inspire for many years to come.

Technology Helps, But Craftsmanship Perfects !

Precision Engineering: Why Skill Still Outweighs State-of-the-Art Machinery

In today’s engineering sector, much emphasis is placed on the latest technology. Computer-controlled systems, laser cutters, and fully automated machinery are often seen as the gold standard for producing precision components. However, while modern equipment has its place, it is not the only route to achieving quality results. At Reid Wire, we believe that the skill, knowledge, and craftsmanship of experienced engineers remain the most critical factors in delivering precision metalwork.

The Value of Experience

Yes, a machine can be programmed to follow exact instructions, but it’s the trained eye and steady hand of a skilled craftsman that often ensures the final product meets the highest standards. Decades of experience in working with wire, sheet metal, and fabricated structures provide an understanding that cannot be replicated by automation alone. Subtle adjustments, anticipation of material behaviour, and problem-solving during fabrication all require a depth of knowledge only a seasoned professional can provide.

Precision Through Craftsmanship

It’s a misconception that only high-tech machinery can deliver tight tolerances or detailed finishes. With the right tools and expertise, an experienced engineer can achieve exceptional precision by applying tried and tested techniques. Whether it is forming wire, welding guards, fabricating staircases, or producing bespoke fittings, craftsmanship remains central to ensuring accuracy and durability.

Flexibility and Problem-Solving

Not every project is suited to mass production or automated systems. Many engineering requirements are unique, one-off, or customised to a client’s needs. In these cases, adaptability and creative thinking are essential. A skilled fabricator can approach a project with practical knowledge, adjusting methods to suit the job rather than relying on a fixed machine process. This flexibility often results in quicker, more cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality.

Technology and Tradition Working Together

While Reid Wire values the role of modern equipment, we also recognise that technology works best when guided by human expertise. Machinery can speed up certain tasks, but the defining factor in producing precision components is always the craftsman behind the process. It is the blend of practical skill and professional judgment that ensures every product meets the high standards expected by our clients.

Conclusion

State-of-the-art machinery is not always a prerequisite for excellence in engineering. The foundation of precision lies in the expertise of those who understand the materials, processes, and applications., our team of experienced craftsmen at Reid Wire, continue to demonstrate that skill and knowledge remain the true measure of quality in metal fabrication.
