William Johnston and Company Limited Industrial gasket manufacturer William Johnston & Company Limited has been manufacturing high quality gaskets for a range of industries for nearly 70 years.

This unrivalled experience means that we are now one of the leaders in the U.K. market and our products are used in utilities, construction and engineering projects throughout the world. Headquartered in Glasgow, with a branch in Inverness and having many global customers, 60-70 % of the products we supply are delivered out with Scotland. Although William Johnston & Company Limited has its roots in the UK’s traditional heavy industries and are main suppliers for shipbuilding and ship repair/refit projects in the private and defence sectors, we are currently the largest gasket manufacturers supplying the water, waste water and gas utilities and the pipeline industry in the U.K. where we have long term supply agreements in place. Our niche service is the supply of flange sets comprising pipeline gaskets along with the relevant fasteners in a branded set which provides considerable savings in time, cost and waste for the end user. In addition, bespoke and standard gaskets are manufactured for the pump, valve, engineering, automotive and many other industries.

Steel Reinforced Gaskets - WRAS (SRG)
William Johnston & Company Limited want to assist you in making water utility fl**ge connections leak free. We are passionate about reducing leakage and ongoing remedial maintenance costs. We are obviously not the only ones. Water Authorities, Contactors and sub-contractors all want the same.
How do we achieve this?
We require a holistic approach.
We can give you the best gaskets and bolts that are suitable for the application and pertinent to the British and harmonised European standards that govern the essential parts of a fl**ged connection, but unless these are installed accurately every time, we still have leakage. Or we can ensure that installation is in line with Best Available Techniques and digitise the installation process to ensure ongoing installation accuracy but without the correct gaskets and bolts we again face leakage.
Our WRAS approved, BS EN 681, W270 tapered Steel Rubber Gasket has been EN13555 tested pertinent to detail from EN1591 as referenced in BS EN 1092. A full suite of target torque values has then been reverse calculated using a lubrication factor of 0.12 and optimum gasket stress of 15MPa. This is achieved by appropriate lubrication of the load bearing surfaces of the fastener assembly using WRAS approved Interflon HT1200 bolt assembly lubricant. This is the only SRG that will work in harmony with Ductile Iron fl**ges. BS EN 1092-2 and EN 545 constrain our bolt grade to a maximum of 4.6. BS EN 12201 PE fl**ges refers to ISO 9624 for details and dimensions pertinent to backing rings. Detail within ISO 9624 details "the selection of gasket type is important and will influence the performance of the joint. Drop-in steel core gaskets with or without integrated O ring have been shown to have better performance than other gasket types".
Tested to 40Bar at ambient temperature these tapered SRG will pressure test at 24Bar and offer long service life at 16Bar covering all connection types for PN16 fl**ges. But keep in mind they must be properly installed.
EUSR approved digitised installation allows us to not only control the process but to record the individual detail that each fl**ge assembly requires. In conjunction with Controlpoint we offer the most advanced digitised fl**ge assembly installation available. Tailored for UK Water Utilities it raises the confidence level between design and installation. Already tried and approved on multiple large diameter schemes within the UK over the past few years and now approved by several water authorities, is it time that you reconsidered your choice of gaskets and bolts?

The Pipeline Industries Guild Scottish Branch are proud to be supporting My Name'5 Doddie Foundation at their Traditional Ceilidh supper on Friday 7th February 2025 in Glasgow.

Doddie Weir OBE was one of rugby’s most recognisable personalities. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their successful tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons.

A talented, committed and athletic lock forward, Doddie then faced his biggest challenge. In June 2017 the Scot revealed he was suffering from Motor Neuron Disease. From the outset, Doddie was driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease.

In November 2017, Doddie and his trustees launched the registered charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Our vision is simple: A World Free of MND.
The number “5” is a special number for the Foundation. It features in the Foundation’s name and is a reference to Doddie’s playing number for his clubs, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and the jersey he wore when he earned his 61 caps for Scotland.

Sandy McEwen, who has been involved with the UK Gasket & Sealing Association (UKGSA) for 15 years, retired from the committee at our AGM in September 2024.
In 1993 William Johnston & Company was one of the founding members of the Association. Sandy has been their representative since 2009 and has been Vice Chair on the committee for a number of years. He also led the fundraising activities, helping to raise over £16,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Sandy joined William Johnston & Company in 2003 and through the UKGSA made many good friends with leading figures in the industry. Following many years in director level roles, including Managing Director, at William Johnston & Company, Sandy retired in 2022 but remained on as a consultant.
This year, Sandy felt the time was right to stand down from the UKGSA committee and hand over the reins to his colleague, Robert Dawson. Robert is Commercial Director at William Johnston & Company and has attended many UKGSA events. At the recent AGM he was voted onto the committee and will take on the role of Treasurer

William Johnston & Company Limited Inverness Branch are delighted to announce that our most recent investment is operational. We now have a CAD controlled, oscillating knife, cutting machine!

Increased efficiency and precision mean quicker turnaround for our valued customer base and increased dimensional accuracy of gaskets, whether standard or to your drawing or design. We can also produce drawings from your samples, all of which are stored in the Cloud for increased efficiency on non-standard repeat jobs.

The 1.5m x 2.5m bed means very large gaskets can be produced on the machine, whilst the nesting software and cutting accuracy means that dovetailed-segment gaskets of any size can be produced quickly and more efficiently than by hand. These can either be bonded in-house or supplied for loose assembly on the fl**ge.

Difficult to cut materials such as Tanged Mica and Tanged Graphite can now be cut in-house, reducing cost and lead times for gaskets that we relied on our Glasgow head office to cut.

Enhanced capabilities to cut intricate design gaskets automatically, where hand cutting would have been labour intensive and therefore expensive, will offer direct benefits to our clients.

Consistency and reliability are two of the services that our Inverness Branch pride themselves on. This investment will strengthen those.

With net-zero targets in mind, reduction in waste material is a natural benefit of good design and planning.
