Conventional Ultrasonic Testing remains one of the most effective inspection methods used across fabrication and engineering. 🔍

The principle is straightforward: high-frequency sound waves are introduced into the material, and reflected signals are analysed to identify internal discontinuities.

In practice, it’s used every day for weld inspection, lamination checks in plate, forging assessment and thickness measurement.

When properly applied, conventional UT provides reliable detection of internal defects, delivers immediate on-site results, and remains a cost-effective solution for many specifications.

As with any NDT method, quality depends on more than just the equipment. Probe selection, calibration, scanning technique, and operator interpretation all play a critical role in achieving meaningful results.

At Axiom Inspection Solutions, we deliver conventional UT services with experienced personnel, calibrated equipment, and clear reporting to ensure reliable and consistent inspection outcomes. ✅

Supplying forged steel components? Ultrasonic testing is often a key part of the quality process.

Forged components are commonly specified for high-load and high-stress applications.

Before machining or final assembly, material integrity needs to be confirmed and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is commonly specified to assess internal soundness of forged material.

It is typically carried out after forging and initial conditioning or before or after heat treatment (depending on specification). We carry out PCN Level 2 inspection of wrought forged products including bars, hollow tubulars, plates and billets.

UT of raw forgings helps identify:
- Internal voids
- Shrinkage cavities
- Inclusions
- Laminations
- Segregation or structural inconsistencies

Early-stage testing allows any material issues to be identified before significant machining time and cost are invested.

Technique selection, scanning coverage, acceptance criteria and applicable standards (for example BS EN, ASTM or customer-specific requirements) all influence how the inspection is performed.

For suppliers of raw forged products, structured UT is not just a specification requirement, it supports consistency and confidence throughout the manufacturing chain.

If your organisation supplies forged steel components and requires reliable ultrasonic inspection at the appropriate stage of production, we’re always happy to discuss how we can support your process.

In precision engineering and fabrication environments, inspection is not an add-on, it’s part of the production framework. NDT isn’t about finding faults. It’s about understanding quality, so when planned well, it supports the engineering process.

Non-destructive testing supports:
- Verification of weld integrity
- Consistency across batch production
- Detection of surface and subsurface discontinuities
- Assessment of material condition
- Confidence in finished components prior to delivery

NDT works best when it operates as a structured part of the engineering process by contributing to quality, consistency, and confidence at every stage.

If your organisation could benefit from a flexible, established NDT partner, we’d be pleased to discuss how we can support your operations.

This week we’re on site at one of our regular clients’ yards on the west coast of Scotland carrying out an ultrasonic thickness survey on a passenger vessel.

Thickness surveys are essential for understanding how a vessel’s structure is performing over time.

By measuring remaining plate thickness across hull and structural areas, we assess material loss and calculate percentage diminution against original material thickness. This allows corrosion trends to be monitored and ensures compliance with class requirements. ✅

We are accredited by Lloyd’s Register to carry out thickness measurement surveys, regularly work alongside MCA surveyors, and have recently completed the approval process for DNV accreditation.

Following completion, we provide a clear, structured report including marked vessel drawings so both the class authority and vessel owner can easily interpret the findings.

Now we just need the weather to play its part this week ☀️🌧️❄️

Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI), or Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), is often viewed as one of the more straightforward NDT methods, but when applied correctly, it remains one of the most effective techniques for detecting surface-breaking defects.

It works by:
- Applying a penetrant liquid to a clean surface
- Allowing dwell time
- Removing excess penetrant
- Applying developer to draw out indications
- Inspecting under visible or UV light (depending on method used)

DPI is particularly effective for identifying:
- Surface cracks
- Lack of fusion breaking the surface
- Porosity clusters
- Fatigue cracking

It is widely used on precision machined parts, structural and pipework welds, cast and forged components, and fittings, particularly where stainless steels, aluminium alloys, nickel-based alloys, or other non-ferrous materials are involved.

On Friday evening we joined the The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) Scottish Branch Annual Burns Supper, which was an extra special occasion for our team, as our very own Nicky Buchanan was presented with the Bob Service Award. 🏆

This award is given to an individual at an early stage of their NDT career who has shown exceptional standards in terms of performance, innovation, attitude or motivation.

Nicky was selected as this year’s winner after being nominated by Craig Donnelly. During the nomination process some of our colleagues and clients kindly offered some words about Nicky:

“His manner is always professional, he’s approachable, and he’s more than willing to help, support, and offer advice whenever needed. His work ethic is excellent, and he takes real pride in what he does. He’s reliable, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with. I’m very happy to promote and support Nicky for this award, as he is thoroughly deserving of the recognition.” – A Currans, Operations Manager (Precision Engineering Client)

“Always a pleasure to see Nicky onsite. Always smiling, customer focused, professional and accommodating.” - R Hall, Engineering Manager (Marine Client)

“...Nicky has demonstrated an “Exemplary” standard of excellence across all aspects of his job. He has achieved exceptional results and consistently exceeded performance expectations, producing the highest quality professional work and delivering on his personal and shared company career development skills and goals.” – M Burns, Inspection Manager, (AIS)

“...Most telling of all is that Nicky genuinely enjoys his career in NDT - something that can’t be taught. He’s become a real asset to AIS, and seeing his progression from our first apprentice into the professional he is today has been hugely rewarding. His journey is a great example of what can be achieved when the right attitude meets the right opportunity.” – M Donnelly, Managing Director (AIS)

It was a pleasure being there with our whole team, and family and friends, to support Nicky in receiving his award.

Well Done Nicky! 👏

Brilliant photo submitted by our technician Steven, who captured this shot while attending an urgent inspection aboard a large vessel. 🚢

We were called out at short notice to support our client, and timing was critical to allow the vessel to depart the dock. A combination of CVI, MPI and UT was requested on newly fabricated welds. Thanks to a quick mobilisation and efficient inspection on site, we were able to turn around the inspection report the same day which avoided further delays for both the client and vessel owner. ✅

A great example of the team responding under pressure and delivering when it matters most. 👏

We offer portable Brinell hardness testing, allowing us to assess material hardness directly on site without the need to remove components or disrupt operations. Brinell testing is ideal for confirming hardness following machining, heat treatment or repair, giving clients confidence that materials meet specified requirements.

Alongside this, we also provide Leeb hardness testing, which is often preferred where access is limited, surface preparation needs to be minimal, or a quicker assessment across multiple locations is required.

By offering both methods, we can select the most appropriate technique based on the material, component size and client requirements.

If hardness testing is part of your scope, we’re happy to provide guidance on the best option.
