The splashback that shrugs off dirt, and cleans with ease

Kitchens and utility rooms take more punishment than any other room in the house, and hygienic PVC cladding is built with exactly that in mind.

It's the same solid PVC sheet used behind the scenes in commercial kitchens and hospitals, chosen because it's totally waterproof, has no grout to stain, and wipes clean with nothing more than soapy water. Properly installed, has a long life, and it's tough enough that you don't need to worry about finding a non abrasive cleaner to use on it

Fitting it yourself is straightforward too. Sheets glue directly to the wall with a polymer adhesive and cut easily with a fine tooth saw, so there's no specialist kit needed to get a professional-looking finish.

August feels early to think about autumn, but it's actually the best time to deal with guttering, because ladders in the rain should not be an option.

Most homes do fine with 112mm Half Round guttering, it's the standard choice and the most cost-effective. If you want a slightly more contemporary look with a bit more water-carrying capacity, Square Line is worth a look, and Ogee gives you that traditional decorative cast-iron look without any of the rust. For bigger roofs or heavier rainfall areas, Deep Flow handles higher volumes without overflowing.

Good PVC guttering, properly installed, typically lasts 20 years or more, and it's lightweight enough that plenty of our customers fit it themselves. Whatever brand you've currently got, our standard systems are compatible with most major manufacturers, so replacing a damaged section doesn't mean redoing the whole run.

The garden room stopped being a luxury add-on a while ago, and the numbers back it up.

Industry research puts the UK garden room market at roughly £266 million in 2024, growing at close to 5.8% a year through the rest of the decade, driven largely by people needing proper home office space without giving up a bedroom to do it.

It makes sense. A dedicated space at the bottom of the garden gives you a real separation between work and home, and it can add value to the property on top of that. But a garden room is only as good as its roof, so whatever you're building, get the roofing and cladding right first and the rest follows.

It's a small detail that trips up a lot of first-time installers. Soffits go up before fascia boards, not the other way round.

The reason is simple once you see it. Plastic fascia boards have a small return built into them that caps around the edge of the soffit, so if the soffit isn't in place first, the fascia has nothing to close against properly. It's possible to do it in reverse, but it's a lot more fiddly than it needs to be.

It's also worth knowing that plastic fascia and soffit boards don't suffer from the wet rot, dry rot or warping that timber does over time, which is why so many people are replacing old wooden roofline with PVC even when there's nothing wrong with it yet.

This is one of the questions we get asked most at the trade counter, and it's an easy one to get wrong if nobody's ever walked you through it.

If you're covering a greenhouse or anything needing regular support, 4 to 10mm is generally right. For open structures like verandas, carports and canopies, you're looking at 10 to 25mm. And if you're enclosing the space and want it properly insulated, like a conservatory, 25 to 35mm is where you want to be.

One more thing that catches people out: leave a 50mm overhang at the roof edge and no more. Go bigger and you actually create more wind force on the sheet, which is the opposite of what you're trying to do.

Not every roofing job needs a big budget, and corrugated PVC sheeting is proof of that. It's generally the cheapest form of roofing sheet we stock, and it still does a proper job on sheds, lean-tos, workshops and other outbuildings.

It comes in a range of thicknesses, shapes, sizes and colours, so you're not stuck with one look regardless of the building. Properly installed and maintained, it'll last decades, and it's genuinely one of the easiest roofing materials to fit yourself.

The sheets simply overlap each other, using the shape of the corrugation to create a watertight join, so there's no complicated jointing system to learn. Just keep an eye on wind direction when you're overlapping, so water can't get up and under.

Fix with the proper screws, washers and caps at the crown of the corrugation rather than the trough, and you've got a roof that'll outlast the shed it's sitting on.

Fortex Click in particular uses a click-and-fit system with a modern V-groove shadow-gap finish, built to speed up installation as well as looking sharp once it's up. Cleaning it is as simple as soap and water, no repainting, ever.

If you want something with a bit more weight to it, we also stock Cedral and James Hardie fibre cement cladding, which resists rot, insects and warping in a way timber never will, while still giving you that traditional look.
