We were pleased to recently welcome P7 pupils from Lundavra Primary School to Alvance British Aluminium as part of their Sustainability Day.

The group enjoyed learning about the history of the site, followed by a visit to the casting shop viewing area and power station. We also had a great discussion about sustainability, climate change and how we're working to reduce emissions through low-carbon aluminium production.

Being able to visit one of the world's lowest-carbon aluminium plants right on your doorstep is a pretty unique experience, and it was great to share it with the pupils and talk about the role sustainable manufacturing can play in tackling climate change.

A big thank you to the pupils for their interest, enthusiasm and the lovely letter you sent to our Electrical Engineer, Connor Anderson.

We're glad you enjoyed your visit just as much as our team enjoyed hosting you all!

We were recently delighted to welcome MBA students from the University of Strathclyde to our site, hosted by James Tangney, our Business Development Manager, who is currently studying on the course himself.

The group were extremely positive about their visit and the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our operations.

Some of the feedback gathered from the visit included:

“At the Alvance British Aluminium factory, I witnessed operations management in a tangible, physical form. Seeing how production workflows, quality control, and workforce coordination function on the factory floor deepened my understanding of the Hayes and Wheelwright framework
- particularly how operational capability must align with long-term strategic positioning. The facility also prompted reflection on sustainability, as aluminium recycling is central to modern ESG commitments.

The hydroelectric plant offered a contrasting perspective. Here, the investment horizon stretches across decades, and decisions made today yield returns long into the future. This connected directly to our macroeconomics and financial strategy modules, reinforcing how infrastructure industries balance capital intensity with public and environmental stakeholder expectations.”

“The most interesting part of the trip was the aluminium factory visit. I was impressed by its efficient operations and commitment to sustainability through the use of hydroelectric power, demonstrating how business success and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”

“I found the business visits, particularly Alvance British Aluminium, most interesting because they provided practical insights into operations, leadership, sustainability, and strategic management in real-world business environments.”

“Alvance British Aluminium changed my thoughts about the diversity of core capabilities a business can have.”

Thank you to the students for visiting us. We wish you every success on your studies. 🎓

Alvance British Aluminium was proud to be represented at a recent reception at 10 Downing Street for Global Deals for British Jobs by Tom Uppington our Managing Director.

At Alvance British Aluminium, we operate Britain’s last remaining aluminium smelter in Fort William - a nationally strategic asset and one of the world’s greenest primary aluminium production sites. Powered by our own renewable hydropower, our teams produce some of the lowest-carbon primary aluminium in the world, supplying essential material to UK industry.

While continuing to support domestic customers, we are also expanding into international markets, helping showcase UK manufacturing expertise on the global stage while supporting British jobs.

This work secures hundreds of skilled roles across the Scottish Highlands, spanning smelting, engineering, maintenance, logistics, hydropower and land management operations. These are long-term careers that support local communities and contribute to the resilience of UK industry.

We welcome the continued focus on backing British manufacturing and creating opportunities for growth through international collaboration. The future of UK aluminium remains bright, and we are committed to play our part.

Another fantastic shot shared by the 'Friends of the West Highland Lines' - this one of our alumina wagons captured by Sandy Smeaton as it approached the Glen Douglas summit earlier this week. 📸

We always enjoy seeing photos of our rail wagons out and about along the West Highland Line and beyond. If you’ve spotted one on your travels, please share your pictures with us in the comments or by message - we’d love to see them. 🚂

📺"The Power of the Glens and the Hills"

Beneath the mountains of Lochaber lies a hidden world of tunnels, water and power that has helped shape the Highlands for generations.

Underneath our feet, water travels through an extraordinary hydro network built to generate the energy that powers the UK’s last remaining aluminium smelter - an incredible feat of engineering that still keeps our operations running today and continues to support industry and jobs.

We are proud to feature in Alba fon Talamh/Scotland Underground on BBC ALBA this week with presenters Hugh Dan MacLennan and Calum Maclean, exploring the history, heritage and continued importance of aluminium production in Lochaber.

The programme also shares Hugh Dan’s personal connection to the smelter, reflecting on his father, who worked here for over 30 years, and the generations of people behind our operations.

You can watch the full programme, which explores other parts of the northwest coast of Scotland underground, on BBC iPlayer ⬇️

Lochaber is once again welcoming riders and fans from across the world for the legendary Scottish Six Days Trial this week.

Alvance British Aluminium are proud to support the SSDT 2026 alongside Jahama Highland Estates, with much of the route crossing our land. The event has deep historical connections to Lochaber, with generations of riders, families and communities helping make it one of the most iconic trials competitions in the world.

It is a great example of outdoor sport, community and responsible land management working together.

Jonathan Hart and Colleen MacLean were live on Nevis Radio this morning, discussing what goes into preparing for an event of this scale from both a land management and community perspective.

They were joined by presenter John Weller and SSDT historian, media commentator and all-round trials guru John Moffat, who shared stories and insights from the event's rich history. Somewhere between the land management chat and the SSDT stories, Jonathan also managed to squeeze in a music request from “The Boss”, proving there is always time for Bruce Springsteen.

Best of luck to all riders for another safe and successful week.
