⭐1960s⭐

A clip from back in the day, when things were done a little differently.

The railway was originally our main method of distribution, beginning in the late 1940s and continuing until the railway line in Forfar closed in September 1967. During those years, rail transport played a vital role in delivering stock to our depots in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and London. 🚂

Once stock and orders were ready, we would notify the railway that ladders were prepared for collection. A Scammell Scarab would then arrive at the factory, where the stock would be loaded before being taken to the station and transferred onto the train network. When deliveries reached their destination, the depots were given a strict 30-minute window to unload the goods before the train continued its journey. 🪜

With the closure of the railway line approaching, we had to rethink how we distributed our products. This led to the construction of our loading bank and the beginning of our move towards road transport. In January 1967, we purchased our first 8-tonne Commer lorry, followed by a 3-tonne vehicle in October of the same year. The fleet continued to grow with the addition of three more vehicles in 1968, marking the start of a new era in the company’s distribution network. 🚛

⭐1970’s⭐

A trip down memory lane.

Looking back at our 1970 price lists for aluminium and timber ladders gives an interesting insight into how both the industry and our products have changed over the past five decades. At the time, timber ladders were still widely used across many trades, while aluminium products were becoming increasingly popular due to their light weight and durability.

The 1970’s were also an important time for development at our West High Street site. To support increasing sales, dedicated workshops for the manufacture of Ladders & Steps were built, providing additional manufacturing space and improving production capacity.

During this period, the company also secured a major contract to manufacture aircraft maintenance platforms and steps for British Caledonian’s hub at Gatwick Airport. A variety of specialist mobile platforms with height adjustment & edge protection, along with motorised service platforms fixed inside British Caledonian’s Hanger were all designed, manufactured & delivered by Ramsay’s. The project demonstrated the company’s ability to undertake larger specialist manufacturing work alongside its standard ladder production.

While products, materials and prices have changed significantly since the 1970s, the company’s focus on quality, reliability and safety has remained consistent throughout.

Getting the angle right matters when using an extension ladder 🪜

The 4-to-1 rule is a simple way to set up your ladder safely: for every 4 metres up, place the base 1 metre out from the wall. This helps create a stable angle of around 75°.

⭐1980’s⭐

The 1980s proved to be a landmark decade for the company, marking a period of significant growth, innovation, and recognition across the Scotland. As football continued to grow in popularity at grassroots and professional levels alike, demand for high-quality training equipment increased and our Ramsay Collapsible Football Goals quickly established themselves as a trusted product used by many professional football teams, including Sir Alex Fergusons renowned Aberdeen team.

Throughout the decade, our reputation expanded well beyond our local area with our Goal Frames becoming increasingly popular across clubs, schools, and training facilities throughout Scotland. Their practicality and ease of use made them stand out, helping to cement the company’s position within the sports manufacturing industry. Interestingly, Ramsay’s move into football goal manufacturing happened almost by accident. The opportunity first arose when Archie Knox, the manager of local club Forfar Athletic, approached us with an enquiry regarding portable football goals for use during training sessions. Recognising both the opportunity and potential demand, Ramsay’s began developing what would soon become known as “Collapsible Aluminium Goal Frames”. Once the first few sets were manufactured and delivered, the product was met with immediate enthusiasm. The innovative design combined strength with portability, making the goals ideal not only for professional clubs but also for schools, youth organisations, and community teams.

Another key milestone during this period came in October 1988, when Andrew (Gordon) Lowson was appointed as a director of the company. He joined the business at the age of 16, beginning in the workshops at West High Street before moving to the installation team at Queenswell Road. He later returned to West High Street as a technical representative, carrying out site visits and handling enquiries, before taking on the responsibility of purchasing raw materials and overseeing product development. His appointment marked another important step in the continued evolution of the business, as it moved confidently into a new era of development and expansion.
