And this is one of the reasons for jams. The end of the spring has ridden over the edge of the bearing, piston goes back and can get stuck on it.

Edit, to avoid confusion, this spring hasn't been cut, its an unfortunate combination of a slightly small diamiter spring guide and slightly larger spring diamiter
