APCL Falmouth Docks and Engineering Company (FDEC) facilitated a harbour towage safety training day afloat this week.

APCL FDEC is the Statutory Harbour Authority responsible for the area of water immediately surrounding Falmouth Docks.

The training day involved over 40 personnel from A&P Falmouth, Keynvor Morlift Ltd, Seawide Services, Marine Plant Hire UK Ltd, Teignmouth Marine Services, Cornwall Diving and Maritime, Falmouth Pilots and Pendennis Shipyard.

All companies underwent training in towing operations which included ship handling techniques, cold vessel move techniques and communications, alongside emergency scenarios and drills.

The training allowed personnel to share experience, best practice and updates of industry best practice. It also allowed trainee skippers and apprentices the time to hone their skills without commercial pressure and in a controlled environment, supported by experienced Masters and Trainers.

Luke Wills, Port Manager and Harbour Master, said: "There is huge value in bringing together towage operators from across the port together all in one place to improve safe harbour operations.

"It was great to see the level of engagement from all operators to make the most of this valuable opportunity and to see the skippers of the future receive an opportunity to train with a variety of vessels and operations.

"A huge thank you to everyone that took part."
