Automated Structural Monitoring Project - Ripon - Phase One

Recent installation of another semi-wireless structural monitoring system, required to monitor certain potential movement, dynamic frequencies, and vibrations of a nearby premises, whilst drilling, grouting, groundworks, and other construction activities take place.

STS-UK were instructed for quick assistance on this matter with the important task of creating a fit for purpose technical proposal in which could capture the required data, assembling the approved system, and providing on-site installation - all within a condensed timeframe.

Now logging; the system is gathering vital data from over forty-five initial nodes, during phase one, which is continuously analysed to commission pre-determined trigger levels, with instant notifications via text and email, to the relevant parties to ensure no excessive movement is caused as a direct consequence of these neighbouring works. This provides the Client with a potential early warning system in which they can initiate their safety protocols to assist with the reduction, or removal of any potential adverse risk.

All data can all be accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer from our secure Client Portal.

STS-UK have just invested in five more brand new vibration monitoring kits, expanding our hire fleet to ensure we can keep on top of the supply and demand requirements for our valued Client’s; and new enquiries.

Why monitor vibration during your project?

During most types of construction work there is a guaranteed biproduct of vibration. Often than not, there is the assumption that if the vibrations can be picked up by humans, then damage to surrounding property is inevitable. However; usually, considerably greater levels of vibration are required to cause significant damage.

The level of vibration transmitted from site activities to the surrounding neighbourhood can cause anxiety and annoyance, disturb sleep, work or leisure activities. Although there are varying degrees of sensitivity between individuals, it can undoubtedly be a nuisance to those affected.

Other impacted elements to consider caused by vibration:

-> Vibration damage to buildings and structures;
-> Nuisance and annoyance to local homes and offices (complaints);
-> Perceived damage to properties – leading to third party claims;
-> Vibration disruption or damage to sensitive equipment;
-> Reputational damage;
-> Possible Considerate Construction Scheme criteria requirements.

All monitoring should follow the material and references stipulate within the most relevant British Standard to the circumstances. To assist site teams with following these indicated limits, visual and sound warnings can be integrated* into each supplied kit. Furthermore, website presentation* capabilities, to display all data recorded including download and interrogation, as well as adjustable trigger limits, with text message* and email notifications*; should this be required.

At STS-UK we offer vibration monitoring services throughout the UK at an extremely affordable price, great flexibility, and a wealth of knowledge to ensure you have the right information and equipment to fulfil any contractual or considerate scheme obligations.

Please do not hesitate to contact us, and open a dialogue surrounding your current project or requirements; we will do our very best to accommodate and assist.

Our bespoke structural monitoring solutions have worked well on the projects that we are brought on to assist with.

STS-UK were instructed for assistance on this particular project, with the task of creating a technical proposal, building the approved system and installing - all within a restricted timeframe and accessibility on-site. The system was required to monitor potential movement of a listed building, whilst demolition and construction of new office blocks take place, with the retention of the front façade skin.

The system gathers vital baseline data which can be analysed to commission pre-determined trigger levels with instant notifications via text and email to the relevant parties. This provides the Client with a potential early warning system in which they can initiate their safety protocols to assist with the reduction or removal of any potential adverse risk.

All data can be accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer from our secure Client Portal. We can in addition, offer complete self-contained solar powered battery systems with dedicated UPS systems, where power to the monitoring locations presents an issue.

New Safe Standing Seating and Crowd Barrier Testing

Safe standing areas have now been approved and actively introduced following a trial during the 2021/22 football season, within some of the top clubs of the first two divisions of football in England and Wales.

STS-UK have been performing the majority of testing for these seating designs over the past year or so, at the stadiums, testing in full compliance to the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds (aka, “Green Guide”).

A recent publication of The Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds, Supplementary Guidance 01: Safe standing in seated areas - Second edition. Published in July 2022, now outlines the main criteria under this scope; and as such any stadium wishing to install such areas, must apply for an appropriate license from the Sports Ground Safety Association (SGSA). Along with ensuring the criteria outlined within the above document has been adhered to.

One of the criteria’s, refer to the action of the barriers being able to demonstrate that the structural design and the methods of fixing of all new independent barriers or seats incorporating barriers, meet the loadings set out in Figure 14 of the “Green Guide”, before spectators are admitted to the area in question. Thereafter, all such barriers should form part of both the management’s planned maintenance programme, and its schedule for structural inspections and testing. (Further Information - SG01 2.3, Figure SG01 2, Figure SG01 3 and SG01 2.3h).

…Why choose to partner with STS-UK?

Our equipment, knowledge and integrity are that of the best within the industry, we utilise bespoke and purpose-built props and frames, which can accommodate a variety of site circumstances to ensure all barrier locations in and about stadiums can be tested, where required.

We monitor all deflection limits using sophisticated calibrated electronic logging technology, delivering exceptional accuracy and efficiency, taking human error elements out of the factual results; which can provide additional comfort to the Client for data quality and reliability.

Pricing competitively, and where existing Contractors and/or quotations are present, we aim to match or beat any like-for-like service.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have a similar requirement.

The trampoline park industry has seen rapid growth in numbers since its conception, (pandemic aside). However, there was increasing industry and public concern due to the various accidents occurring and questionable operational management of certain parks within the United Kingdom, and other countries.

During 2017, a standards publication was generated by the International Association of Trampoline Parks (IATP), amongst others on the committee, and released with the vision to bestow a collaborative minimum level of health and safety within the industry.

STS-UK have since been an approved inspection Company for a number of years, authorised to carry-out third-party inspections in accordance with the BSI PAS 5000:2017 document – allowing parks the opportunity to become full members of trade associations; following our certification. Our team of experienced inspectors undertake numerous trampoline park inspections each year for new and existing Clients, and in doing so have built a steady knowledge-base in reference to the standard and general health and safety within the parks.

Pricing competitively, and where existing third-party quotations are present, we aim to match or beat any genuine like-for-like service, within the UK, and other Countries we may operate within.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should your park wish to become or sustain BSI PAS 5000:2017 compliance.

Railway Track Monitoring

Safety has become a critical part of everyday life and has never been considered more important than in today’s world. Here, monitoring of a live railway track was required whilst localised works were to be undertaken, in an attempt for the rail service to remain fully operational during this process. STS-UK were requested to assist on the matter with industry standard and bespoke monitoring of the railway tracks, along with sanctioning pre-determined trigger levels with instant notifications via text and email to relevant parties. This provided the Client with a potential early warning system in which they could initiate their safety protocols to assist with the reduction or removal of any potential adverse risk.

Our bespoke monitoring systems range from static automated total stations through to, preferable, robust programmable dynamic instrumentation systems; which the latter can provide high accuracy real-time continuous data. All data can all be accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer with downloadable formats from our secure Client Data Portal. Our systems have been thoroughly tested and proven within the industry, and we can even offer (as per this installation) complete self-contained and managed, solar powered battery systems; where power to the monitoring locations presents an issue.
