Stravaigin (the legacy of CAPRO) is owned and managed by Sandy’s Community Centre (Castleview Centre) and has been formed in partnership with Community Learning and Development (East CLD), part of the City of Edinburgh Council
It can be explained under these three headings. Community Led – Where families, people and groups from Craigmillar and Portobello area become members of Stravaigin. They de
cide how they want to use the outdoor activities equipment and get trained on how to use it. Developing community use to be able to do group and family activities such as social events, camping, cycling, canoeing– who knows what this will develop into! Community (capacity) Building - Community Learning and Development (CLD) are part of the City of Edinburgh Council and are partners with Stravaigin and have helped initiate this via staffing resources. They are currently well placed to continue this support as well as deliver activities and training in how to use the equipment for low to medium (technical) use. CLD will also be using the equipment to deliver educational learning courses in the Craigmillar and Portobello area that will nurture development and achievement using outdoor activities and education. Whether it be with Stravaigin members, youth groups, employability groups, community groups etc. Community Access The main objective of Stravaigin is that the equipment is for community member’s use. Therefore every member will be able to hire the appropriate equipment in a way that is both affordable and accessible. As family and individual members the deposit for hiring the equipment (which is often a barrier to being able to take part in these kind of activities) is to be underwritten by Stravaigin. Membership fees and the basic hire charges will be used for the maintenance and development of this fantastic resource. Other funding sought by and for the development of Stravaigin.
