Though this week’s Tech Tuesday might not be quite as technical as usual, today is about something far more personal. Today, we’re taking a moment to say goodbye to Ross, our Engineering Manager, and to recognise the enormous contribution he has made to Apuljack Electronics over the years.
Ross first joined us back in June 2017 as a Junior Admin Assistant. His role involved a bit of everything, from packing boxes and booking in orders to helping with the general day-to-day needs. From those early beginnings, he progressed to Product Solutions Coordinator, before taking on the role of Engineering Team Lead.

Over the years, Ross has taken on a huge amount of responsibility. He has helped manage the engineering team, carried out countless quality checks, and played a significant part in ensuring that the orders and units you send to us are handled with care and attention. His work has touched so many parts of the business, and his contribution has been felt by colleagues across the company.
When Ross leaves us this Friday, he will have been part of Apuljack Electronics for over nine and a half years — that’s 2,182 days of hard work, dedication, challenges, and achievements.

And what a nine and a half years it has been! He has been with us through two building moves, helped us navigate the many challenges that came with our new website, and represented the business at countless trade shows between 2018 and 2025. From travelling to events and setting up stands to speaking with hundreds of people at places like the NEC, Ross has played an important role in helping to represent Apuljack Electronics to the wider world.

Throughout that time, he has worked alongside almost every member of our team and been part of nearly every chapter of our journey, across all but one of our locations — Our very first premises, which was about 1/10th the size of our current office!
When you look back at how much has changed since Ross first walked through the door in 2017, it really puts into perspective just how much he has been part of. He has seen the business grow, adapt, move forward, and overcome its fair share of challenges. Through all of that, he has been a familiar face, a source of experience, and someone who has helped keep things moving behind the scenes.

So, while we may usually use Tech Tuesday to talk about engineering, products, and technical challenges, today is an opportunity to recognise something much more important: the people who make this business what it is.

Ross, on behalf of everyone at Apuljack Electronics, thank you for everything you have done over the past nine and a half years and congratulations on your recent engagement! Thank you for your hard work, your commitment, and the time and energy you have given to the business. You have been part of so many changes and milestones here, and your contribution will not be forgotten.

As you move on to your next chapter, we wish you success, happiness, and fulfilment in whatever comes next. You leave behind a real legacy here, and we hope you look back on your time at Apuljack Electronics with as much pride as we feel in having had you as part of our team.

Got a broken NE266?
We can now repair NE266 control panels - even where the glass has been accidentally ripped straight off of the board.

We have developed our own custom PCB which can be glued directly to the glass incorporating the required tracks, which allows us to accurately reattach the touch glass panel, both mechanically and electrically to the original PCB.

The result? A fully restored control panel, returned to its original functionality without the need to replace the entire unit.

Whilst some faults can be obvious to the naked eye, other faults can require advanced techniques and extensive testing to identify the cause.
When placing an order for a repair on our website, taking a few extra moments filling in the symptoms could shave a day or two off the length of your order. Providing specific and in-depth symptoms gives our engineers a head start on the assessment and analysis.
There are various questions we ask if we are unable to replicate your fault(s)
1. Was there any event that you think might have caused this issue?
2. What EXACTLY was or was not displayed on the control panel?
3. At what times does it do this fault (e.g. certain things on/engine running/at night)
4. What parts of the system work fully?
5. Is the fault intermittent or temperature sensitive?
Including answers to these questions in your original fault/symptoms is likely to avoid us having to send a further email seeking clarification, and helps to reduce the turnaround time on you order/s.

If a battery leaks acid, the consequences can go far beyond cosmetic damage. Lead-acid batteries use sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄), which is highly corrosive and can have a pH of around 0.8. If it comes into contact with a PCB, it can cause serious and potentially costly damage. Unfortunately, battery acid can damage a PCB in more than one way. It is both corrosive and electrically conductive, meaning it can cause corrosion while also creating unintended electrical paths and short circuits.

The EC400 in the photos is a good example of both types of corrosion. In this case, leaked acid caused a short circuit that resulted in a large portion of the connectors burning and sections of a PCB track being completely blown away. There was also significant corrosion, which can spread into and underneath components such as relays and capacitors, making the damage even more difficult to detect and repair. There are several factors that can increase the risk of a battery leaking, including overcharging, physical damage, extreme temperatures, and age. Taking preventative measures can therefore help reduce the risk of expensive damage to surrounding electronics.

Some simple precautions include:
• Disconnecting batteries when equipment will not be used for an extended period.
• Avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures.
• Keeping batteries physically separated from sensitive electronics wherever possible.
• Regularly inspecting batteries for signs of swelling, damage, corrosion, or leakage.
A little preventative maintenance can go a long way towards protecting both your batteries and the electronics around them—and potentially saving you hundreds of pounds in repair costs.

Did you know that we regularly receive control panels for repair in some truly extraordinary sizes, shapes and weights?

Many of the particularly long or wide panels are integrated directly into the caravan or motorhome interior, forming part of the functional panelling—often positioned conveniently near the entrance door. Whereas others can be found in various locations sometimes not even in view. From a repair perspective, we’re more than happy to accommodate these larger panels, even if they do take up a little more than their fair share of shelf space!

When sending larger control panels to us for repair, please take extra care with protective packaging and securing the unit inside the box. The greater the size and weight, the more vulnerable the panel can be to impact, flexing and transit damage. A little extra packaging can go a long way towards ensuring your repair arrives safely and is ready to get back into service.

Our helpful banana is included for scale, demonstrating just how substantial some of these panels can be.

What Causes Corrosion in a Leisure Vehicle?

When we discuss corrosion with customers, many understandably state that there has been no water ingress, leakage, or liquid spillage within their vehicle - and in many cases they are absolutely correct.

Corrosion does not necessarily require a visible leak or spillage. One of the most common and overlooked causes is condensation.

Condensation occurs when warm, moisture-laden air comes into contact with colder surfaces within the vehicle. This can result in microscopic or invisible moisture deposits forming on metal components, fixings, chassis sections, electrical connections and other vulnerable areas. Over time, repeated exposure to moisture can initiate oxidation and accelerate the corrosion process.

Leisure Vehicles are particularly susceptible because they are relatively enclosed environments. Occupants introduce additional water vapour simply through normal activities such as breathing, cooking and drying damp clothing. In colder conditions, the temperature difference between the interior air and the vehicle structure can significantly increase the potential for condensation.

There are moisture-absorbing products which can help control humidity in specific areas but should not be considered a complete solution. The most effective approach is controlled, targeted ventilation combined with regular air circulation. Allowing moisture-laden air to escape and replacing it with drier air helps reduce relative humidity and limits the amount of moisture available to condense on cold surfaces.

And yes - breathing a little less may help too!!
