Your garden room starts at the back door — not just at the building itself.

Before choosing where your cabin will sit, think about how you will get there. A path, walkway or steps can save you from trekking over wet grass and bringing muddy footprints back into the house in winter.

It is also worth looking at the entrance overhang. A little cover gives you somewhere dry to unlock the door and helps protect the front of the cabin from the weather.

Would you work from your shed? We certainly would not recommend it.

Sheds are brilliant for lawnmowers, bikes and garden storage. But when you need to concentrate, take calls and get through the working day, it helps to have a space designed for the job.

A dedicated garden office can keep work away from the kitchen table, the lounge and the everyday distractions of home. And, importantly, away from the smell of petrol.

Is your cabin window or door catching when you close it?

In timber buildings, seasonal movement in the wood can sometimes mean a small adjustment is needed. Most windows and doors have adjustable hinges, usually operated with an Allen key, which can help bring everything back into line.

In this video, the window was catching at the bottom closing edge. A few careful hinge adjustments moved it into the right position again.

Before you order a garden building, check the details — not just the picture on the plan.

Are the internal and external dimensions shown? Are the door and window sizes, glazing, floor, roof and insulation all clearly specified? And what about painting, electrics, finishing around the base and connecting the building back to the house?

These are the details that need to be clear before work begins. If you are unsure, ask the question and get the answer in writing.

No taxi. No last orders. No wondering whose turn it is to host. 😄

A garden bar or entertaining cabin is one of those spaces that can completely change how you use your garden.

Add a bar, fridge, TV, seating and a bit of lighting and suddenly you've got somewhere that works for football nights, birthdays, family get-togethers or simply a quiet drink at the weekend.
